Es un cantante de salsa panameño.
Miguel Ángel Barcasnegras, más conocido como “Meñique”, nació el 30 de diciembre de 1933 en la ciudad capital de Panamá. Es el octavo hijo de catorce hermanos de una familia humilde. Sus padres fueron Don Azael Barcasnegras y Doña Rosa Díaz Trejos, de quienes recibió una educación estricta, pero basada en el respeto hacia los demás y el amor familiar.
Desde muy joven trabajó limpiando zapatos, vendiendo periódicos, lavando coches y se destacó en el oficio de la sastrería. A la edad de quince años, un cuñado suyo lo escuchó cantar mientras se duchaba, e inmediatamente le propuso entrar como corista en una banda en la cual cantaba, La Sonora Panameña de Guillermo Cantillo. A los seis meses, por abandono del solista, ocuparía con dieciséis años, el puesto de éste. En esta época se gestó su apodo, “Meñique”, con el que es reconocido a lo largo de su carrera, debido a su baja estatura y el cual se le atribuye al trompetista Chicho Cáceres de la Orquesta Penonomé. También por influencia de un viejo humorista de la televisión cubana, nace su santo y seña salsero “Ataja! Si puedes, y si no puedes, apártate”. En este periodo de su vida pasó por la Orquesta de Raúl Ortiz, la Universal de Mojica (con la que grabó su primera canción titulada “Colón”), y finalmente la primera orquesta panameña de la época, La Perfecta de Armando Boza.
Compaginó su escalada musical con sus estudios de sastrería en el “Institute of Arts and Design of Panama”, oficio que le permitió continuar en el mundo de la música, cosiendo de día y cantando de noche. En el año 1968, con motivo del Carnaval de Panamá, Kako Bastar buscaba un nuevo talento para cubrir la baja de su formación del solista panameño Camilo “Azuquita”, y encontró en Meñique (que para entonces era vocalista del “Combo Continental” del maestro Reinaldo Alfú) la voz que deseaba.

Miguel Ángel Barcasnegras, better known as “Meñique”, was born on December 30, 1933 in the capital city of Panama. He is the eight child of fourteen siblings from a humble family. His parents were Don Azael Barcasnegras and Doña Rosa Díaz Trejos, from whom he received a strict education, but based on respect for others and family love.
From a very young age he worked shining shoes, selling newspapers, washing cars and stood out in the tailoring trade. At the age of fifteen, a brother-in-law of his heard him sing while taking a shower, and immediately suggested that he join a band in which he sang, La Sonora Panameña de Guillermo Cantillo. Six months later, due to the soloist’s abandonment, he would occupy the latter’s position at the age of sixteen. At this time his nickname, “Meñique”, was conceived, with which he is recognized throughout his career, due to his short stature and which is attributed to the trumpeter Chicho Cáceres of the Penonomé Orchestra. Also under the influence of an old comedian from Cuban television, his salsero patron saint and sign “Ataja! If you can, and if you can’t, move away” is born. During this period of his life he went through the Raúl Ortiz Orchestra, the Universal de Mojica (with which he recorded his first song entitled “Colón”), and finally the first Panamanian orchestra of the time, La Perfecta de Armando Boza.
She combined her musical career with her tailoring studies at the “Institute of Arts and Design of Panama”, a job that allowed her to continue in the world of music, sewing by day and singing by night. In 1968, on the occasion of the Panamanian Carnival, Kako Bastar was looking for a new talent to cover the loss of Panamanian soloist Camilo “Azuquita” from his formation, and found in Meñique (who was then the vocalist of the “Combo Continental” by maestro Reinaldo Alfú) the voice he wanted.
