Biography
Leopoldo Sánchez Labastida one of the two original singers of the Apson, as well as a soloist. He was born on April 2, 1945 in Sinaloa. Although some think that he was originally from Sinaloa and that he was born on April 2, 1945, other sources point out that he was actually born in Mexico City on January 30, 1946. But it is precisely in Culiacán that someone suggested they act in a place called “La Fogata”, another group also appeared there. Leopoldo Sanchez Labastida was the son of the owner of the Bar. Given that the singer of that group only wanted to play the requinto, the door opened to receive “Polo”.
But the resources of “Los Apson” were meager, so their relatives met them there to help them, paid their debts and supported them in their odyssey towards the Capital. Their route continued through Mazatlan where they stayed only a few days. In those years. Polo was not yet of legal age, so they asked his father to allow him to accompany them.
In 1964, when “Los Apson” were at their best, Polo separated from the group, under strong rumors due to differences with Frankie, another of the group’s leaders and singers, to continue his career with another group called “Los Polaris” , which happened without sorrow or glory. However, Polo launched himself as a soloist, managing to place several radio hits, among which “El Última Beso” stands out, in August 1966. Curiously, he recorded this song together with Los Apson, at the request of the singer.
In 1965, he was invited to be part of the cast of the television program “Muévanse Todos”, hosted by Vianey Valdez on channel 6 in Monterrey, Nuevo León, together with Jorge Barón (former singer of “Los Zipps”) and Juan El Matemático Garza. , were the pillars of said program until its termination. Between 1966 and 1968 he recorded six full-length albums as a soloist and one as a duet with Vianey Valdez. Polo is remembered for his great success “The Last Kiss”; however, his discography as a soloist was very extensive with numbers such as: “Dos llantos”, “El Dr. del amor”, “Anna”, “El duelo”, “Hilda”, “El Chisme”, “Ella no está a ”, “After the last kiss”, “Patches”, and others. The singer tragically died when he drowned in a hotel pool where he was staying in Mérida in July 1974, at the age of 29, during a tour with Los Rebeldes del Rock in Yucatán. He was: Pole.
