Miller nació en el seno de una familia de músicos de jazz. Su padre, George “Sonny” Miller, era un músico amateur y su esposa, Bertha, cantante. Miller was born into a family of jazz musicians. His father, George “Sonny” Miller, was an amateur musician and his wife, Bertha, a singer. Miller learned from his godfather, Les Paul, the first guitar chords of his at the age of five. Les Paul and his wife Mary Ford were regular visitors to the Miller house. Paul encouraged little Steve with his prodigious skills as a guitarist. Most of Steve’s success was thanks to Paul’s help. Miller continues to use many of the techniques that Les Paul taught him.
In 1950 Steve’s family moved to Dallas, Texas. At St. Mark’s School, Miller formed his first band, The Marksmen. Miller taught his partner Boz Scaggs guitar chords so he could get into the band. In 1962, Miller returned to Wisconsin and entered the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he formed the group the Ardells. Two years later, Miller traveled to Denmark, to the University of Copenhagen for a semester in his final year to study comparative literature.
Although the Steve Miller Band had limited peak commercial success, its ongoing popularity has been remarkable. In 1978 the 1974-1978 Greatest Hits album was released. In 2009, Miller was inducted into the Woodrow Wilson High School hall of fame.
On June 15, 2010, Miller released Bingo !, his first blues album in seventeen years.
