Sledge fue una de las figuras clave del soul y uno de los pioneros del llamado country soul a finales de la década de 1960. Se le conoce mundialmente por su interpretación del tema When a Man Loves a Woman (1966), que fue el único número 1 de toda su discografía. Su admirable voz le llevó a la inmortalización de dicho tema, aunque también obtuvo otros grandes éxitos en la década de 1970, como I’ll be your everything y Sunshine.

En 1987 obtuvo otro éxito internacional cuando su tema de 1966 “When A Man Loves A Woman” se utilizó en un anuncio de la famosa marca Levi’s.

Por su repercusión como figura de la música, fue incluido en el Rock and Roll Hall of Fame en 2005.

Falleció el 14 de abril de 2015, a los 74 años, en su residencia de Baton Rouge (Luisiana), debido a un cáncer hepático.

Sledge se casó dos veces y le sobrevivió su segunda esposa, Rosa Sledge, con quien se casó en 1980. Tuvo 12 hijos, tres de los cuales se convirtieron en cantantes.

His admirable voice led to the immortalization of the song, although he also had other great successes in the 1970s, such as I’ll be your everything and Sunshine.

In 1987 he achieved another international success when his 1966 song “When A Man Loves A Woman” was used in an advertisement for the famous Levi’s brand.

Because of his repercussion as a music figure, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005.

He passed away on April 14, 2015, at the age of 74, at his residence in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, due to liver cancer.

Sledge was married twice and was survived by his second wife, Rosa Sledge, whom he married in 1980. He had 12 children, three of whom became singers.
