Biography
John Charles Julian Lennon was born on April 8, 1963, in Liverpool, England. Singer, songwriter and musician. Only child of the marriage made up of the Beatle John Lennon and Cynthia Powell and half brother of Sean Lennon. Julian’s name comes to be a tribute to John’s mother, Julia.
Brian Epstein, manager of The Beatles and Julian’s godfather, suggested that John hide his marriage and fatherhood for a while so as not to affect the group’s popularity. It was thus that Julian lived away from the media and publicity of Beatlemania. As a result, Julian lived his childhood with an absent father, so he is cold when referring to John, his half brother Sean and especially Yoko Ono.
Julian inspired certain musical compositions by The Beatles, such as the well-known song Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, from a drawing he had done; inspired Paul McCartney in the song Hey Jude and John wrote Good Night, sung by Ringo Starr.
Julian’s musical debut was at an early age, at age 10, playing drums on the song Ya-Ya from the John Lennon album Walls and Bridges. His artistic career became popular with the debut of his album Valotte and with the song Too late for Goodbyes in 1984. After the great success, there were times of low sales and Julian turned to alcohol and drugs. He maintains very good relations with the former members of The Beatles, especially with Paul McCartney, who for the release of Julian’s debut album, sent him a telegram wishing him luck. Julian has even admitted that he prefers the musical work of Paul McCartney to that of his father.
His voice, appearance and musical style are very similar to those of John Lennon, so there was some speculation that The Beatles would return with him as a member, which never happened.
Three new songs and a new version of the song Saltwater can be heard on his MySpace. Julian finished a new album in 2008 and will possibly release it in 2009.
Julian Lennon is also the producer of the documentary called “WhaleDreamers” about an Australian Aboriginal tribe and their special relationship with whales. This documentary also deals with many environmental issues. This film has received many awards and was presented at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival.
