Acker Bilk

In 1962 her instrumental “Stranger on the Shore” became the UK’s best-selling single of the year, spending 50 weeks on the UK charts. It also reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 list in the United States in 1962.
He was born in Pensford, Somerset in 1929. Although his father tried to teach him to play the piano, the young Bilk preferred to play football. His restless nature led to him losing two teeth in a fight and part of a finger in a sled accident, which affected his clarinet playing.

After completing his school years, he spent time working in a cigarette factory in Bristol, before joining the British Army engineering unit and being assigned to the Suez Canal. There he learned to play the clarinet after a sapper friend gave him one that he had bought in a bazaar. Subsequently, Bilk obtained a higher quality instrument provided by the Army, which he kept after his demobilization. After completing his military service, he began working as a blacksmith in his uncle’s business.
