Biography
Lucio Battisti (Poggio Bustone, March 5, 1943 – Milan, September 9, 1998) was an Italian singer-songwriter, considered among the greatest and most influential musicians of Italian rock, ballads and light music, both as a composer and performer of their own music as well as that of other artists.
His beginnings in the mid-1960s were as a songwriter for other artists. The Mogol lyricist was in charge of the texts of the songs. In 1966 he recorded his first single, Per una lira. Many of his songs were repeatedly recorded by countless Italian and foreign singers and groups, such as Mina, Paolo Meneguzzi, I Camaleonti, Patty Pravo, Dik Dik, Antonio Zabaleta, Dyango, Fedra, Ricardo Montaner, Laura Pausini, Emmanuel, etc. He has sold more than 25 million records.
Lucio Battisti was and still is considered one of the most influential musicians and singers in the history of Italian popular music. Its production represented an important and decisive change in the Italian pop scene from the end of the 1960s. Charles, Lucio Battisti knew how to combine the purely Italian melodic tradition with the best of R&B and Anglo-Saxon musical currents like no other. Lucio Battisti fuses folkloric elements of Italian music with rock and pop after 1970, managing to establish a very innovative sound at the time and together with bands like Premiata Forneria Marconi, Formula 3 and Alberto Radius. Together they sealed the lines that Italian popular music would follow after 1970 through works that were initially misunderstood and severely criticized by a section of the audience, while at the same time a younger audience discovered the power of their musical ideas.
Battisti finally prevailed with Il mio canto libero, a work that broke sales and popularity records and included the fusion of folk, rock and progressive rock elements, managing to attract the attention of musicians from all over the world. The works of Battisti and the Mughal lyricist and poet were also aimed at raising the talent of other Italian singers; Both composed records for Mina and produced great hits of the time, among which the song Amor mío stands out for Mina Mazzini’s work, which constitutes the intense fusion of the soprano’s vocal power, the innovative melodies of Lucio Battisti, the intense lyrics by Mogol and the presence of avant-garde and symphonic rock with arrangements by the Premiata Forneria Marconi that accompanies the studio recording.
Lucio produces other albums such as Il nostro caro angelo (1973) and Anima Latina (1974) that dive deep into avant-garde, fusion music and progressive rock. The song La Machina del tempo stands out in the latter. Anima Latina is considered a true masterpiece of the music of the 20th century, which affects a sophisticated rhythmic complex that is difficult to follow.
Intricate textures and fusions appear in the work, making their appearance for the first time in popular music. Despite the fact that it was a complex album, recorded under an almost hermetic concept, it is considered by critics to be the best developed work by the Battisti-Mogol duo. Already at this point, a variety of Latin American musicians such as Charly García, L.A. Spinetta or Milton Nascimiento had seen in the distant lands of Italy a great display of genius and the inspiration to go even further from rock and ballads, assuming a Latinized lyric that was amalgamated with the most Anglo-Saxon conceptions of melody.
