Luis María Aguilera Picca (City of Buenos Aires, February 24, 1936-Madrid, October 10, 2009) born Luis María Aguilera, known by his stage name Luis Aguilé, was an Argentine nationalized Spanish singer-songwriter of romantic music, who was one of the first musicians to sing rock in Spanish and also lived in Spain. Active since the 1950s, he became famous throughout Latin America and in Spain.
He recorded more than 800 songs, half of them his own, and some have become standards of popular music in Spanish, such as “When I left Cuba”, perhaps his best-known song, recorded by many other artists. He also composed children’s songs and published several books. Luis María Aguilera was born on February 24, 1936 in Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina. In her hometown she combined her first performances as a singer, at family gatherings and parties, with her work at the Central House of the Bank of the Province of Buenos Aires. In 1951, at the age of fifteen, he got his first contract, at the Maison Doré, a luxurious Buenos Aires nightclub, and began working on the radio.
At the age of 20, in May 1956, he appeared on the Music-Hall television contest, achieving enormous success. Shortly after he would record his first album, with the Odeón record company, a single with the songs “El preso numero nuo” by Roberto Cantoral and “Tu memoria y yo” by José Alfredo Jiménez, two rancheras where he sings accompanied by Ángel Pocho Gatti and his group. . Shortly after, he released his first LP, Luis Aguilé, with ten songs (Gigí, Linda nena, Mujer tejedora, Tiro Liro Liro, Pancho López, Qué ser ser, Luna bonita, Luna Azul and El alegría silbador).
