Grupo Femenino Bolivia

Founded: August 6, 1983

Biography:

Founded on August 6 in the country Bolivia, although the reason for the name GRUPO BOLIVIA was not that, it was because the first members were from different cities, in reality the foundation does not have to do with the national holidays, it is rather the first performance than they had on the shores of Lake Titicaca.

The founders were:
• Luisa Molina
• Nancy Pomier
• Betty Paz
• Sofia Paz

Twenty years ago, five girls rioted the Closed Coliseum when they showed up in typical North Potosí attire and playing strings, percussion and wind instruments.
“My emotion was great since we began to interpret the chuntunqui Bolivia and then Altiplano (caporal) and people did not stop applauding us,” recalls Teresa Vela, founder of the Bolivian women’s group, which on August 6 celebrated two decades of artistic life.

In its debut, at the Music Festival organized by the National Lottery (1983), the group generated great surprise in the public and obtained fourth place, it was the revelation and received the first invitation to participated in the Copacabana International Music Festival.

At that time, in the artistic environment there were famous solo singers and Las Imillas and La Ñustas were known, made up of the sisters Sonia and Norma Ponce; but the Bolivian Women’s Group was presented as the first instrumental and vocal female group.

“How (is he going to play zampoña)! We macho men used to say, but Alcides Mejía loved it when a woman plays her instruments,” says Mario Castro, musician and current representative of the group Bolivia, when he recalls Teresa’s beginnings in the interpretation of wind instruments.
“They don’t owe anything to anyone and they earned that. Everything they set out to do, they achieved, despite the fact that it is much more difficult and sacrificing for the female artist ”, says Castro now.

“At the beginning,” Teresa continues, “there was a rejection of the artists and they frequently suggested that the girls open the show or that they wait. Today that has been overcome ”.

Another obstacle was the mentality of conservative parents who did not accept that their daughters follow a career with late nights in nightclubs. “It was a process of raising awareness among parents, society and fellow art,” says Teresa.

In 1990, the group performed at Nice La Farandole, in France, and again generated a great sensation in the public, who liked the female proposal.

Since then, the musicians made international tours of three or six months through France, Germany, the United States, Asia and South America.

The hectic pace in which the group entered also made many of its members choose to leave music after marrying or pursuing a professional career.

Finding members who can play an instrument was also difficult. But in the end, new talents were discovered and a chain of young people emerged who play charangos, zampoñas guitars and others.

Today, with a great career as an emblem, the group has nine albums and is at its most successful with their great hit Nostalgias.
