Biography
To «La Môme Piaf», so called in its beginnings, many songs of the Francophone repertoire are owed such as La vie en rose, Non, je ne regrette rien, Hymne à l’amour, Mon légionnaire, La Foule or Milord, known worldwide . A prominent personality, Piaf inspired numerous composers and mentored young artists who achieved international fame. Édith Piaf also stood out as a film and theater actress, participating in numerous films and plays throughout her artistic career.
She signed a contract with Polydor and recorded her first album in 1936: Les Mômes de la cloche (“Children of the bell”). This makes it an immediate media hit. But in April of that year Louis Leplée, the owner of the cabaret in which she appeared, was assassinated at her home. This reveals that he was part of the underworld of the Parisian neighborhood of Pigalle, which plunges Édith to the center of scandal and media lynching, which sends her, once again, to the place where she came from: the street and the miserable little cabarets. .
She reconnects with the composer Raymond Asso (author of Mon légionnaire and Le Fanion de la Légion, songs created by Marie Dubas in 1935, which Piaf took up at the beginning of 1937). Asso becomes her Pygmalion and her lover, preparing her to be a professional Music hall singer.
In March 1937, she made her debut in the music hall genre at the ABC theater in Paris. She immediately becomes a star of French song, adored by the public and broadcast on the radio. In 1940 Piaf triumphed at the Bobino with a piece written especially for her by Jean Cocteau called Le Bel Indifférent, which she successfully performed, together with the actor Paul Meurisse.
