Joshua Otis “Josh” Turner (Hannah, Florence County, South Carolina, November 20, 1977) is an American country and gospel singer, songwriter, producer, and actor who signed to MCA Records Nashville in 2003, the same year that released his first album Long Black Train which includes a song of the same name.

Turner was raised in Hannah, South Carolina. His parents are of British descent. Growing up in the church, he founded a gospel quartet called Grateful Hearts, where he sang the basses, in addition to singing the bass and baritone parts in backing vocals.

In 1996, Turner developed an injury to his right vocal cord. Doctors advised him to let it heal itself. Surgery wasn’t necessary, but he had to rest his voice for a year. While Turner put his voice to rest at home, he learned classical vocal technique and methods to care for his voice and avoid developing additional problems. Turner claims that he “learned to whistle very well during that year.”

After high school, he spent time at Francis Marion University before moving to Nashville, Tennessee to pursue a career in music and enrolled at Belmont University. After college, his fledgling career got a boost on December 21, 2001, during his Grand Ole Opry debut, when he debuted a song he wrote titled “Long Black Train.” He received a standing ovation in the middle of the song, then sang again for an encore.

Turner has a brother, Matt, and a sister, Carrie. Turner is a debout Christian.9 he married his wife Jennifer Ford in 2003. They met at Belmont University, where they both attended school at the time. Jennifer travels with Josh when he is on tour, playing keyboards and singing backing vocals. They have four children, Hampton, Colby, Marion, and Samuel (born 2014).
