Tommy Ramone

Biography:

He was the lead drummer and founding member of the punk rock band The Ramones. Tommy was responsible for recommending that Joey Ramone drop the drums to fill the role of vocalist.

He participated in the band until 1978 when he recorded their last studio album, Rocket to Russia. He was replaced by Marky Ramone.

His activity in the band, although short, helped shape the Spirit of the Ramones. An example of this is having composed the song “Blitzkrieg Bop”, considered by many fans as the best of the group and even defined on many occasions by critics as the first punk song. After some time of his departure he returned to the band, no longer as a member but as producer and publisher of their records.

He was also noted for inventing a drumming style that was later taken up by later drummers in the band.

His last musical project was the bluegrass band Uncle Monk with Claudia Tienan.

On July 11, 2014, he died at the age of 65 in Queens, New York as a result of cholangiocarcinoma (cancer of the bile ducts) being the last surviving founding member of the Ramones band.
