With the Girls, I Don’t Know .

Philippe Lavil is a descendant of French settlers from the West Indies (locally nicknamed békés). His father, Max Durand de La Villejegu du Fresnay (1922-1989) and his mother, Marthe Bally (1923-2021), operated a banana plantation in the François commune.

In 1960 Philippe Lavil was sent to a boarding school in the Drôme, where he continued his studies at the Roseraie de Dieulefit school. His English teacher Graeme Allwright introduced him to the song. The young man buys a guitar and decides to become a singer. His parents, little enthusiasm, encouraged him to spend three years at a business school, EDC, which did not prevent him from recording his first single, entitled À la califourchon, in 1969.

In 1970 he recorded a song that would become a hit and also one of his greatest hits, With the Girls, I Don’t Know. Later he recorded several pieces, but none had the same success.

In 1975, he performed at the Olympia, with Julien Clerc, which was one of Philippe Lavil’s first concerts. The following year, he recorded Hey Mister Lee, which was moderately successful. In 1978 he recorded an album, February, with lyrics by Didier Barbelivien and Alain Souchon, but this album was not successful. He then he left his record company.

In 1982, when he was thinking of leaving music, he recorded a Didier Barbelivien song: Il tap sur des bambous, which became the hit of the summer and his biggest hit, with more than a million and a half copies sold. More confidential hits follow, like Rio or San Miguel.

In 1985, he re-recorded a song signed by Barbelivien, which was also a great success, She prefers love at sea. The following year, he recorded an album, which produced two songs that were widely distributed at the time, The Woman Who Never Says I Love You and she, She Knits Sweaters For Nobody. However, these titles are not as successful as the previous ones.

In 1987 he recorded another song that became a great success, Kolé Séré, in duet with the singer of the group Kassav, Jocelyne Béroard.

In 1990, he released a more personal album, De Bretagne or Elsewhere, whose eponymous title met with moderate success. Two years later, in a crooner style, he released Y’a plus hiver, of which the title Si Marianne was black, the only successful title, but very confidential.

In 1994 he performed at the Opus Café in Paris and reviewed his songs on Lavil Déménage. He continues to publish albums regularly, such as Ailleurs, c’est still l’idéal in 1997, Retour à la case creole in 2002 or Calypso in 2007.
