Biografia

Fue un compositor e intérprete mexicano de canciones y boleros. Se le reconoce como uno de los más populares de su época y género. También conocido con los apelativos de El Músico Poeta y El Flaco de Oro, su obra fue ampliamente apreciada no solo en México, sino también en Centroamérica, Sudamérica, el Caribe y España. Luego de su muerte, se le ha reconocido también en Estados Unidos, Italia y Japón.

Sus intérpretes principales fueron y son Pedro Vargas, quien era su compadre, Toña la Negra (María Antonia Peregrino Álvarez), Pedro Infante, Juan Arvizu, Nestor Mesta Chayres, Javier Solís, Alejandro Algara, Hugo Avendaño, Plácido Domingo, Julio Iglesias, Manuel Mijares, Vicente Fernández, Pérez Prado y otros artistas más.

No hay certezas sobre la fecha ni el lugar de nacimiento. El músico aseguraba haber nacido en Tlacotalpan, Veracruz, el 1 de octubre de 1900.1​ Así figura en varias de sus biografías, y ese es el año grabado en su tumba ubicada en la Rotonda de las Personas Ilustres.

Sin embargo, el periodista Jaime Almeida aseguró, luego de una investigación realizada en 1970, que el compositor nació realmente en la Ciudad de México, el 1 de octubre de 1900, basándose en la fe de bautizo y el acta de nacimiento que encontró en el Registro Civil: «Lara nació en un lugar llamado El Callejón Puente del Cuervo número 16, que ahora corresponde a la segunda calle de República de Colombia, en el Centro Histórico, a unas calles del mercado Abelardo Rodríguez. De hecho aún está la casa donde vivía la familia Lara Aguirre.» Es decir, que Agustín Lara se quitaba tres años. Pero también es cierto que siendo muy pequeño la familia se mudó a Tlacotalpan, donde pasó su infancia. Otros aceptan esta fecha, pero entienden que el lugar real del nacimiento no fue la Ciudad de México sino en Tlatlauquitepec, Puebla. La familia vivía allí, pero como el padre del futuro artista tenía que pasar examen de médico, se trasladaron a la capital de México y allí aprovechó la ocasión para inscribir a su hijo en el Registro Civil, trece días después de haber nacido, el 12 de noviembre de 1897. Según el autor, todas las personas que entrevistó en Tlatlauquitepec aseguran que Lara nació en ese lugar.

En el libro Mi novia la tristeza los autores aceptan la fecha y lugar del acta de nacimiento y se preguntan: «En una vecindad de esa calle vivía el doctor Joaquín M. Lara y su esposa María Aguirre, padres del compositor. El señor Lara le dijo al juez del Registro Civil, el licenciado Wenceslado Briceño, que su hijo había nacido en esa casa. Ni el padre de Agustín ni su madre ni los testigos Carlos María Padilla y Jacinto Lara tenía ninguna necesidad de mentir acerca de este hecho. Si Agustín había nacido en Tlacotalpan sólo trece días antes de levantada su acta, como tanto aseguraba.

Otras versiones, mucho menos creíbles, afirman que nació en España o Suchitepequez, Guatemala.

He was a Mexican composer and performer of songs and boleros. He is recognized as one of the most popular of his time and genre. Also known by the names of El Músico Poeta and El Flaco de Oro, his work was widely appreciated not only in Mexico, but also in Central America, South America, the Caribbean and Spain. After his death, he has also been recognized in the United States, Italy and Japan.

His main performers were and are Pedro Vargas, who was his compadre, Toña la Negra (María Antonia Peregrino Álvarez), Pedro Infante, Juan Arvizu, Nestor Mesta Chayres, Javier Solís, Alejandro Algara, Hugo Avendaño, Plácido Domingo, Julio Iglesias, Manuel Mijares, Vicente Fernández, Pérez Prado and other artists.

There are no certainties about the date or place of birth. The musician claimed to have been born in Tlacotalpan, Veracruz, on October 1, 1900. This is how it appears in several of his biographies, and that is the year recorded on his tomb located in the Rotunda of Illustrious Persons.

However, the journalist Jaime Almeida assured, after an investigation carried out in 1970, that the composer was really born in Mexico City, on October 1, 1900, based on the baptismal certificate and the birth certificate that he found in the Civil Registry: «Lara was born in a place called El Callejón Puente del Cuervo number 16, which now corresponds to the second street of the Republic of Colombia, in the Historic Center, a few streets from the Abelardo Rodríguez market. In fact, the house where the Lara Aguirre family lived is still there.” In other words, Agustín Lara took off three years. But it is also true that when he was very young the family moved to Tlacotalpan, where he spent his childhood. Others accept this date, but understand that the real place of birth was not Mexico City but in Tlatlauquitepec, Puebla. The family lived there, but since the father of the future artist had to pass a medical exam, they moved to the capital of Mexico and there he took the opportunity to register his son in the Civil Registry, thirteen days after being born, on the 12th. November 1897. According to the author, all the people he interviewed in Tlatlauquitepec say that Lara was born there.

In the book My girlfriend sadness, the authors accept the date and place of the birth certificate and ask themselves: «Dr. Joaquín M. Lara and his wife María Aguirre, parents of the composer, lived in a neighborhood on that street. Mr. Lara told the Civil Registry Judge, Mr. Wenceslado Briceño, that his son had been born in that house. Neither Agustín’s father nor his mother nor the witnesses Carlos María Padilla and Jacinto Lara had any need to lie about this fact. If Agustín had been born in Tlacotalpan only thirteen days before his certificate was drawn up, as he claimed so much.

Other versions, much less credible, claim that he was born in Spain or Suchitepequez, Guatemala.
