Belushi nació en Chicago, Illinois, hijo de Agnes Belushi (nombre de soltera Samaras), una cajera y Adam Belushi, inmigrante de Albania y camarero que abandonó su ciudad natal, Qytezë, en 1934 a los quince años.
En 1973 fue contratado como escritor en el National Lampoon’s Radio Hour. Pero lo más importante estaba por llegar, ya que formó parte del reparto original de la serie de variedades «Saturday Night Live» (junto con Dan Aykroyd, Chevy Chase, Jane Curtin, Laraine Newman y Gilda Radner).

In 1973 he was hired as a writer on the National Lampoon’s Radio Hour. But the most important thing was yet to come, as he was part of the original cast of the variety series «Saturday Night Live» (along with Dan Aykroyd, Chevy Chase, Jane Curtin, Laraine Newman and Gilda Radner).
In 1978 he participated in a TV movie, The Rutles, where he was the promoter of a rock band that was reminiscent of The Beatles.
