Nació en Carlsbad, Nuevo México, siendo su padre el coronel francés Etienne de Bujac y su madre Julia Armandine Graves, la cual murió poco después de nacer él. Cabot debutó en el cine en 1931, y durante el curso de su carrera apareció en casi cien películas, incluyendo The Bad Man of Brimstone (1937), con Wallace Beery.
Coincidió con John Wayne en el plató de Angel and the Badman (1947). Cabot made his film debut in 1931, and during the course of his career he appeared in nearly a hundred films, including The Bad Man of Brimstone (1937), with Wallace Beery.
He met John Wayne on the set of Angel and the Badman (1947). The two hit it off, shared drinks, and later Cabot was a first choice for supporting roles in John Wayne movies. They worked together eleven times, including The Comancheros (1961), Hatari! (1962), McLintock! (The great McLintock) (1963), In Harm’s Way (First victory, 1965), The War Wagon (Attack on the armored car, 1967), The Green Berets (Green Berets, 1968), Hellfighters (The fighters from hell, 1968) , The Undefeated (The indestructibles, 1969), Chisum (1970) and Big Jake (The great Jack, 1971).
