MARIA MARGARETHE ANNA SCHELL, más conocida como MARIA SCHELL (15 de enero de 1926 – 26 de abril de 2005) fue una actriz austriaco – suiza. Fue una de las principales estrellas del cine alemán en las décadas de 1950 y 1960.

Biografía y carrera
Schell nació en Viena, la capital de Austria, hija de la actriz Margarethe (de soltera Noé von Nordberg; 1905–1995), que dirigía una escuela de interpretación, y de Hermann Ferdinand Schell (1900–1972), poeta, novelista, dramaturgo y dueño de una farmacia.

Schell se estrenó en la película Steibruch de Steiner de 1942 , al lado del conocido actor suizo Heinrich Gretler , y tomó lecciones de actuación para varios compromisos teatrales. Después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, obtuvo su primer papel protagónico en la película de 1948 El ángel de la trompeta , dirigida por Karl Hartl . Biography and career
Schell was born in Vienna, the capital of Austria, the daughter of actress Margarethe (née Noé von Nordberg; 1905–1995), who ran an acting school, and of Hermann Ferdinand Schell (1900–1972), poet, novelist, playwright and owner of a pharmacy.

Schell made his debut in Steiner’s 1942 film Steibruch, opposite well-known Swiss actor Heinrich Gretler, and took acting lessons for various theatrical engagements. After World War II, he landed his first starring role in the 1948 film The Angel with the Trumpet, directed by Karl Hartl. He starred in films such as The Magic Box, Dr. Holl (1951), So Little Time (1952), The Heart of the Matter (1953). His emotional performance earned him the nickname Seelchen («little soul»), coined by his colleague Oskar Werner.
The 1956 film Gervaise directed by René Clément was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film; While in Hollywood, Schell met Yul Brynner, who urged her to participate in The Brothers Karamazov (1958) in the role of Grushenka. Schell also starred with Gary Cooper in The Hanging Tree (1959) and with Glenn Ford in Cimarron (1960). In 1976, he starred in an episode of Kojak, and also had three guest appearances on the German television series Der Kommissar and two on Derrick, in the episodes «Yellow He» (1977) and «Klavierkonzert» (1978). Schell appeared on stage, including an acclaimed performance in the 1976 Broadway play Poor Assassin by Pavel Kohout and the title role in Friedrich Dürrenmatt’s play The Visit with the Schauspielhaus Zürich ensemble.

Schell lived in seclusion in the remote town of Preitenegg, Carinthia in the Austrian Alps until her death from pneumonia on April 26, 2005, at the age of 79.
