KEN CURTIS, fue un actor y cantante estadounidense, conocido principalmente por su papel de Festus Haggen en la serie televisiva de la CBS del género western Gunsmoke, conocida en España, México y el resto de la América Hispana como «La Ley del Revólver».
Su verdadero nombre era Curtis Wain Gates y nació en Lamar (Colorado), criándose en Las Ánimas (Colorado). Su padre, Dan Gates, era sheriff. Su familia vivía sobre la cárcel, y su madre, Nellie Sneed Gates, cocinaba para los prisioneros.
En su época de escuela superior, Curtis jugó como quarterback en el equipo de fútbol americano. El sirvió en el Ejército de los Estados Unidos durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial entre 1943 y 1945 y luego decidió estudiar medicina, especialmente cardiología.
Curtis fue cantante antes de dedicarse a la interpretación, y combinó ambas carreras tras sus inicios en el cine, cantando con los populares Sons of the Pioneers desde 1949 a 1953 así como con la banda de Tommy Dorsey, reemplazando en el puesto a Frank Sinatra. KEN CURTIS, was an American actor and singer, best known for his role as Festus Haggen on the CBS western genre television series Gunsmoke, known in Spain, Mexico and the rest of Hispanic America as «La Ley del Revolver».
His real name was Curtis Wain Gates and he was born in Lamar (Colorado), growing up in Las Animas (Colorado). His father, Dan Gates, was a sheriff. His family lived above the jail, and his mother, Nellie Sneed Gates, cooked for the prisoners.
In his high school days, Curtis played quarterback on the football team. He served in the United States Army during World War II between 1943 and 1945 and later decided to study medicine, especially cardiology.
Curtis was a singer before turning to acting, and he combined both careers after his early days in film, singing with the popular Sons of the Pioneers from 1949 to 1953 as well as Tommy Dorsey’s band, replacing Frank Sinatra. Later Curtis joined Shep Fields and His New Music, a band that worked with a brass section.
In 1945, Curtis was hired by Columbia Pictures to work on a series of musical westerns alongside The Hoosier Hot Shots, playing early romantic singing cowboy roles. For much of 1948 Curtis was a singer and host of the WWVA Jamboree music radio show.
In 1981, Curtis was inducted into the Western Performers Hall of Fame at the Cowboy & Western Heritage National Museum in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
