His father, Jules Dassin, was an American actor and filmmaker of Russian-Polish Jewish and Ukrainian descent, the author of so-called &#8220;black film&#8221; works. His mother, Beatrice Launer, was a virtuoso violinist of Austro-Hungarian origin.
