Camilo Azuquita Naci\u00f3 en la ciudad de Col\u00f3n, Panam\u00e1, el 18 de febrero de 1945 con el nombre de Luis Argum\u00e9dez Berguido. El nombre \u201cCamilo\u201d obedece a que era seguidor de su padrino, el legendario Camilo Rodr\u00edguez, quien fue su instructor de respiraci\u00f3n y le daba consejos. \u201cAzuquita\u201d por la dulzura de su voz, comparable con dulzura del az\u00facar. Cuenta la historia que finalizando la d\u00e9cada de 1960, un locutor cubano residente en Panam\u00e1, , miraba con atenci\u00f3n la manera en que cantaba el tradicional bolero “Sabor a m\u00ed”, d\u00e1ndole giros al estilo del guaguanc\u00f3. El locutor del programa \u201cque se transmit\u00eda por ‘Radio M\u00eda’ se le ocurri\u00f3 decir: \u201ct\u00fa eres Azuquita\u201d.<\/div>\n

Siendo un jovencito Camilo Azuquita particip\u00f3 en un concurso para cantantes aficionados en Radio RPC (Radio Programas Continentales), donde interpret\u00f3 el tema: ‘Historia de Un Amor’ quedando descalificado. Luego el pianista V\u00edctor Boa, quien reconoci\u00f3 su buen timbre ,logra sacar lo mejor de su voz y le brindan una segunda oportunidad, que no desaprovech\u00f3; logrando est\u00e1 vez el primer puesto del concurso. As\u00ed Azuquita logr\u00f3 integrar el grupo de cantantes que esta emisora presentaba todos los viernes en los teatros Hispano y Edison.<\/div>\n

Durante los carnavales de Panam\u00e1 (Febrero de 1966) Azuquita tiene la oportunidad de conocerse con Rafael Cortijo, que llegaba al club El Royalito donde se presentaba Camilo Azuquita. Finalizado el show, Rafael Cortijo le propone que trabajen juntos en Puerto Rico, debido a que Ismael Rivera, se encontraba a\u00fan recluido. Estando en la Isla, tambi\u00e9n graba con Roberto Roena y sus Megatones.<\/div>\n

Tras su paso por Puerto Rico, Camilo Azuquita, viaja a la ciudad de New York, para realizar una gira por los mejores teatros latinos de la ciudad; situaci\u00f3n que le permite conocerse con el talentoso percusionista Francisco ‘Kako’ Bastar, quien le expresa que necesitaba un cantante como \u00e9l. Al Santiago de Alegre Records les da la oportunidad y lanzan el disco ‘Live It Up.’ El \u00e1lbum incluy\u00f3 n\u00fameros inolvidables como: Aunque no tengo miedo – Chica del Barrio Obrero – Panam\u00e1s Boogaloo – Guapo – y – Lo Que sea – entre otros. En Panam\u00e1 el disco tuvo tal impacto, que les contratan para los Carnavales de 1967, donde Camilo Azuquita, regresa ya como artista de primer nivel. Con Kako grab\u00f3 tambi\u00e9n los discos ‘Salsa All Stars’ y ‘Uni\u00f3n Din\u00e1mica’.<\/div>\n

En 1968,luego de grabar el disco ‘Salsa All Stars’ con Kako, Azuquita vuelve Puerto Rico y se reincorpora al combo de Cortijo; graban el disco Ah\u00ed Na\u2019 M\u00e1\u2019 \/ Put It There, donde se incluyeron los temas “Agua Que Va a Caer” ,”El Reloj de Pastora” en homenaje a Arsenio Rodr\u00edguez, “Pensamiento” y “Mil Gracias” de Pedro Flores. Para 1969 Camilo regresa a New York, y se contacta con Lino Fr\u00edas, que le brinda la oportunidad de cantar con La Sonora Matancera ante el retiro de Justo Betancourt, as\u00ed durante 6 meses cant\u00f3 junto a la Sonora Matancera compartiendo el cr\u00e9dito de vocalista con Yayo ” El Indio “.<\/div>\n

Camilo Azuquita was born in the city of Col\u00f3n, Panama, on February 18, 1945 with the name of Luis Argum\u00e9dez Berguido. The name “Camilo” is due to the fact that he was a follower of his godfather, the legendary Camilo Rodr\u00edguez, who was his breathing instructor and gave him advice. \u201cAzuquita\u201d for the sweetness of her voice, comparable to the sweetness of sugar. The story goes that at the end of the 1960s, a Cuban broadcaster living in Panama looked carefully at the way in which he sang the traditional bolero “Sabor a m\u00ed”, giving turns in the style of the guaguanc\u00f3. The announcer of the program \u201cwhich was broadcast on ‘Radio M\u00eda’ came up with the idea of \u200b\u200bsaying: \u201cyou are Azuquita\u201d.<\/p>\n

As a young man, Camilo Azuquita participated in a contest for amateur singers on Radio RPC (Radio Programas Continentales), where he performed the song: ‘Historia de un Amor’, being disqualified. Then the pianist V\u00edctor Boa, who recognized his good timbre, manages to get the best out of his voice and gave him a second chance, which he did not miss; achieving this time the first place in the contest. Thus, Azuquita joined the group of singers that this station presented every Friday at the Hispano and Edison theaters.<\/p>\n

Camilo Azuquita decides to travel to Peru in 1966 and records with La Orq. by Enrique Linch (Argentine musician based in Lima).<\/p>\n

During the carnivals of Panama (February 1966) Azuquita had the opportunity to meet Rafael Cortijo, who arrived at the El Royalito club where Camilo Azuquita was performing. After the show, Rafael Cortijo suggested that they work together in Puerto Rico, because Ismael Rivera was still in prison. While on the Island, he also recorded with Roberto Roena and his Megatones.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

After passing through Puerto Rico, Camilo Azuquita travels to New York City to tour the best Latin theaters in the city; situation that allows him to meet the talented percussionist Francisco ‘Kako’ Bastar, who tells him that he needed a singer like him. Santiago de Alegre Records gives them the opportunity and they release the album ‘Live It Up.’ The album included unforgettable numbers such as: Although I’m not afraid – Chica del Barrio Obrero – Panamas Boogaloo – Guapo – and – Lo Que sea – among others. In Panama, the album had such an impact that they were hired for the 1967 Carnival, where Camilo Azuquita returned as a top-level artist. With Kako he also recorded the albums ‘Salsa All Stars’ and ‘Uni\u00f3n Din\u00e1mica’.<\/p>\n

In 1968, after recording the album ‘Salsa All Stars’ with Kako, Azuquita returned to Puerto Rico and rejoined Cortijo’s combo; they recorded the album There Na\u2019 M\u00e1\u2019 \/ Put It There, which included the songs \u201cAgua Que Va a Caer\u201d ,\u201dEl Reloj de Pastora\u201d in homage to Arsenio Rodr\u00edguez, \u201cPensamiento\u201d and \u201cMil Gracias\u201d by Pedro Flores.
