‘Mayfair Witches’ Season 2, Episode 4, “Double Helix” Recap & Review

When I discovered Mayfair Witches season two only had seven episodes, I wondered how they would approach it story-wise. To be fair, season one had only eight episodes, but still, one less episode in a big, arcing story like this adds to the challenge of making something entertaining, engrossing, and tight. After “Double Helix, there are only three episodes left, and with the hints this and the last episode dropped, it will be a considerable challenge to wrap things up and not leave the audience feeling cheated.

The episode starts with a flashback, showing why Rowan (Alexandra Daddario) and Lark (Ben Feldman) went their separate ways. Two people want two different things; it’s nothing new, but the powers seem to want Lark around as a callback to Rowan’s past and the life she could have had. However, later in the episode, after a meeting between the two, Lark takes a cup with Rowan’s DNA for analysis. You can’t blame him; he still cares, and she’s acting weird, but this romantic angle still feels too forced.

The Talamasca, or at least Albrecht (Dennis Boutsikaris), has Lasher (Jack Huston). As Cip (Tongayi Chirisa) soon finds out on the hunt for Lasher, he’s not being held at their usual facility for supernatural detainees. Albrecht has always had his own agenda and now it seems he intends to carry out that plan. The Talamasca isn’t impressed and thinks Cip knows something, so they take him in with the plan of shipping him off to Amsterdam to answer questions. The Talamasca has always been this strange entity with seemingly endless heads, and this is a prime example of how things are not always what they seem.

Rowan and Moira (Alyssa Jirrels) chat with Cortland (Harry Hamlin) about how to find Lasher. They all realize that the key is Julien (Ted Levine), Cortland’s father. As with most things in the supernatural world, his being dead is not really a huge obstacle. They can communicate with him through his old Victrola record player, which he bound himself to before death. However, it seems Dolly Jean (Charlayne Woodard) took it so she and Evelyn (K. Steele) could take turns ‘communicating’ with Julien in a passionate way. (Mayfair Witches has interesting ideas regarding sex and consent.) Rowan uses the Victrola to slip into the other realm to speak with him, which ends the episode.

The biggest reveal of “Double Helix” was the Taltos being mentioned. For those who are unfamiliar with that name, they are part of the Mayfair Witches novels and have a whole book dedicated. It was a fun but curious inclusion here. We have some very intriguing possibilities with the Interview with the Vampire connection from last week and then Taltos this week. With only three episodes left in the season, I’m not sure how much time can be spent on either, as there are several lingering storylines.

Jojo (Jen Richards) and Daphne (Olive Abercrombie) are still in the land of out of phase, thanks to Rowan. Currently, she doesn’t have the strength to bring them back. As with the Lark story arc, these two things feel more like filler as it lacks any real substance. The show’s biggest issue is trying to be all things to everyone. The dark horror tone touched on in the first two episodes has vanished, and we are back to the gothic supernatural vibe. This is not a bad thing, but the darker tone was compelling, so I’m hopeful it will return when the season wraps up.

Watching “Double Helix,” you get the impression that we have moved beyond simply treading water like last week’s episode. Still, ideas and characters may have little time to develop into something more substantial. It will be interesting to see how they try and bring it all together. At this point, it seems something may get lost along the way.
