Since Avengers: Endgame, Disney and the MCU have been under fire for releasing a plethora of films and TV shows that haven’t been up to par with what the franchise juggernaut released up until 2019. Easily forgetting about franchise-best films like Spider-Man: No Way Home, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 that were released in the post-Endgame era, die-hard fans have chastised the company for a few less-than-stellar products, like Eternals and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.
One of the absolute bright spots of the last few years has been the MCU’s Special Presentations, which, thus far, have included The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and the black-and-white sole horror entry in the franchise, Werewolf by Night. Both films were extremely well received last year, with Werewolf by Night earning an 89% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Werewolf by Night stars Gael García Bernal and Laura Donnelly in the lead roles of Jack Russell and Elsa Bloodstone, and the story follows a group of monster hunters that are competing against each other against a vicious beast for a chance to obtain the legendary Bloodstone.
The 52-minute short film was directed by Michael Giacchino, who is mostly known for his musical compositions on films like Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Jurassic World, and Inside Out. Giacchino paid tribute to horror films of decades past by choosing a black-and-white film style for the werewolf movie, which also helped cover the gory brutality that came with the film.

However, as an extra treat for horror fans this spooky season, Disney+ will be releasing a fully colorized version of Werewolf by Night, as part of their Hallowstream 2023 promotion. While the original black-and-white version will be available on Hulu starting September 15th, 2023, the colorized version will be a Disney+ exclusive.
Fans of the film will finally get the chance to see how bloody the MCU can get, especially in preparation for more horror-centric characters that are on the way in 2024 and beyond, like Blade, Ghost Rider, and hopefully a second season of Moon Knight.
The new colorized version will be available to stream on Disney+ on Friday, October 20th, 2023, just in time for Halloween.
