Joe Hill Discusses ‘Abraham’s Boys’: “Natasha Kermani Crushed It” (Exclusive Interview)

Joe Hill is prolific and has seen several adaptations of his stories on both the big and small screens. Of course, he is the son of legendary horror author Stephen King and even starred in Creepshow (1982) as a kid, but Hill’s work stands on its own and boasts a dedicated fanbase. His latest adaptation, Abraham’s Boys, is based on his 2005 collection of short stories, 20th Century Ghosts. The film premiered at the 2025 Overlook Film Festival in New Orleans on Saturday, April 5.

Written and directed by Natasha Kermani (Lucky, V/H/S/85), the film stars Titus Welliver (Bosch, Sons of Anarchy) as Abraham Van Helsing, the vampire hunter, said to have faced Dracula himself. He has relocated his wife Mina (Jocelin Donahue: The House of the Devil, Insidious: Chapter 2) and their sons Max (Brady Hepner) and Rudy (Judah Mackey) to a secluded house in an undeveloped area of the California desert. However, the horrors Van Helsing encountered overseas may have found him and his family.

While at the premiere, HGL talked with Hill and asked if it’s difficult to, in a sense, let his baby go once it gets adapted. He explained, “Not really, because when I wrote the short story or the novel or the comic, I had my whack at it. I took my turn and told the story to the best of my ability, focusing on the things that seemed important to me.”

Hill continued, “When someone adapts it to make a show out of it or a film out of it or a comic book or something, it’s always interesting to see their version because they’re looking at it through a whole different set of lenses. And aspects of the story that are less important to me become heightened to someone else. Characters that I only sort of understood, they may understand better.”

Natasha Kermani had more fleshed-out characters than Hill’s short story allowed, and the author obviously appreciated her vision. During a panel earlier in the day at the Overlook Film Festival, Hill praised the film and was excited for audiences to see it. He also told HGL at the premiere, “In the case of Abraham’s Boys, Natasha Kermani crushed it. There’s great performances from Titus Welliver, from Brady Hepner.” And went on to say, “For me, a story rises or falls on whether or not you can sense the character has an inner life. And you can sense her characters have inner life…there’s something going on there. They’re not just moving from point A to point B.”

He also described the film’s direction as “very Hitchcock,” comparing the vibe  to “stuff like Psycho, Rear Window, Vertigo.”

When it comes to his on-screen adaptations, Hill explains, “I’ve been very lucky, but some of that is that I’ve written high-concept stuff at a time when there were 10 billion streaming channels, and the demand for content has never been so high. I could have been writing exactly the same stuff in the ‘70s, and maybe I would have had two or three things adapted, but you know, we’re in a different era.”

RLJE Films and Shudder have acquired the rights to Abraham’s Boys, which Illium Pictures and Tea Shop Productions produced. An official release date has not yet been announced.
