The anticipated prequel series It: Welcome to Derry will soon be available on Max. The streaming platform recently released a teaser for its upcoming content, and we’re excited for what’s to come.
The now-iconic Pennywise the Dancing Clown first appeared in Stephen King’s classic novel It, published in 1986. The story explores topics such as small-town prejudice, losing childhood innocence, abuse, bullying, and confronting your deepest fears. The book was initially adapted for television in 1990 with a miniseries directed by Tommy Lee Wallace, starring Tim Curry as Pennywise and a talented cast.
Andy Muschietti directed the two-part feature adaptations IT and IT Chapter 2, released in 2017 and 2019. The films follow the Losers’ Club as they encounter a terrifying entity called Pennywise, played by Bill Skarsgård. It: Welcome to Derry will expand the IT universe by delving deeper into Stephen King’s novel.
The Plot
Because IT (2017) was set in 1989, the series will be set in 1962, which is essential to the plot. Pennywise hibernates for 27 years after each reign of terror, so the show will let viewers witness what happened the previous time It appeared. The show will also give insight into the mysterious It’s origins.

Sibling filmmakers Andy Muschietti and Barbara Muschietti told EW:
“Specifically, we are telling the stories of the interludes, writings by Mike Hanlon based on his investigation that includes interviews he conducts with the older people in the town. In “Welcome to Derry,” we touch on the usual themes that were talked about in the movie—friendship, loss, the power of unified belief—but this story focuses also on the use of fear as a weapon, which is one of the things that is also relevant to our times.”
They continued, “Twenty-seven years is the dormant period of Pennywise. It’s a different part of American history with a new set of fears for children, as well as adults having in mind the cost of the Cold War. Our baseline is 1962, but we do a few jumps to the past…. Every 27 years when It appears, It’s cycle is marked by two catastrophic events, one at the beginning and one in the end. We are using the Black Spot as an event in which many stories are built around.”
The Cast & Crew
Bill Skarsgård will continue playing Pennywise. The main cast in season one is Jovan Adepo, Chris Chalk, Taylour Paige, James Remar, and Stephen Rider. The supporting cast includes Madeleine Stowe, Alixandra Fuchs, Kimberly Guerrero, Dorian Grey, Thomas Mitchell, BJ Harrison, Peter Outerbridge, Shane Marriott, Chad Rook, Joshua Odjick, Morningstar Angeline, and Rudy Mancuso.

Andy Muschietti will direct four episodes in season one and serves as an executive producer with Barbara Muschietti, Jason Fuchs, Brad Caleb Kane, David Coatsworth, Bill Skarsgård, Shelley Meals, Roy Lee, and Dan Lin.
