‘Drop’ Review: Meghann Fahy Is a Glorious Mess in This Nail-Biting Whodunit

Despite being just four months into 2025, Christopher Landon is having a stellar year. His first release (as co-writer and producer), the Valentine’s Day slasher Heart Eyes, surpassed box-office expectations. His latest film, Drop, was screened at the 2025 Overlook Film Festival and is now in theaters nationwide.

The film features Meghann Fahy (The White Lotus, The Perfect Couple) as Violet, a single mom going on her first date after the death of her husband years earlier. She meets Henry (Brandon Sklenar: 1923, It Ends with Us) at a fine dining restaurant; however, what was meant to be a nice, quiet dinner turns into chaos when someone begins airdropping messages to Violet’s phone. The mysterious sender issues increasingly dangerous demands while threatening her child’s life.

The basic premise isn’t entirely original, and the inclusion of technology in horror thrillers is nothing new; however, Landon’s clever presentation of the messages Violet receives elevates the story in enjoyable and engaging ways. During the post-film Q&A at Overlook, an audience member asked about the techniques, and Landon explained that merely displaying messages on the screen is “boring.” While this technique can still be effective for filmmakers producing low-budget screenlife films, Drop executed it in the best way I’ve seen so far.

Drop was filmed primarily in one location: a beautiful restaurant with a breathtaking city view. The restaurant was specifically constructed for the film, adding a nice dose of realism and a stylish aesthetic. Fahy’s stunning red outfit serves as the cherry on top. Viewers will feel they’re also experiencing a disastrous first date.

Universal Pictures

Meghann Fahy carries much of the film’s weight, and there isn’t a single emotion she fails to convey throughout the 100-minute runtime. When I spoke with Landon at Overlook, he said, “The casting gods smiled down on me for this movie,” and he wasn’t exaggerating. Fahy and Brandon Sklenar share a charming chemistry, even as things escalate. Other standouts include Jeffery Self as their delightful server, Matt; Reed Diamond as Richard, a man also having a rough night; and Gabrielle Ryan Spring as a bartender named Cara.

The core of the story is a mystery, prompting the audience to question who, why, and where. Everyone within a certain radius of the couple becomes a suspect, and the motive doesn’t reveal itself immediately. It’s nail-biting fun as Violet’s anxiety becomes our own. That said, while Landon is known for the hilarious Happy Death Day films and Freaky, Drop takes on a more serious tone by depicting domestic violence. The flashbacks add gravity to Fahy’s character, helping us understand why events have escalated as they have. Still, as the evening progresses, things become a bit too silly and over-the-top, likely pulling some viewers out of the experience. Others, however, will appreciate the absurdity of it all.

Christopher Landon continues to establish himself as one of the most exciting horror filmmakers today, and overall, Drop further solidifies that status.
