Christopher Landon Talks ‘Drop’: “The Casting Gods Smiled Down on Me” (Exclusive Interview)

Christopher Landon‘s latest release is the mystery thriller Drop, which screened at the 2025 Overlook Film Festival and was released in theaters nationwide this weekend. We spoke with Landon before the screening in New Orleans about the film and his other 2025 release, Heart Eyes.

Drop follows Violet (Meghan Fahey: The White Lotus, The Perfect Couple), a single mother going on her first date since her husband passed away. After meeting her date, Henry (Brandon Sklenar: 1923, It Ends with Us), at a fine dining restaurant, someone begins airdropping messages to Violet’s phone. She must comply with their escalating demands to keep her young son safe.

Landon is best known for the horror comedies Happy Death Day, Happy Death Day 2U, and Freaky, all of which feature strong female leads. His latest release is no different. When discussing Meghann Fahy as the lead in the film, Landon told us, “The casting gods smiled down on me for this movie. She’s a force of nature. She is remarkable in this movie. She carries the entire thing. There’s nothing she can’t do.” He continued, “She’s also just a really good person, which is just the icing on the cake for me. I think people are gonna be blown away.”

Regarding Fahy’s captivating on-screen presence, Landon remarked, “I’ve described her as a cross between Julia Roberts and Michelle Pfeiffer. She has this outward charming charisma and likability that I think Julia always had, and I also think that she has a little bit of mystery and the sexiness of Michelle Pfeiffer.” He further explained, “It was great to make this movie. I’m so proud of it, but it’s also one of those things where I’m like, now I get to watch her become a giant movie star.”

Although it’s only April, the filmmaker is having a fantastic year with horror releases. The Valentine’s Day slasher Heart Eyes, which he co-wrote and produced, premiered to positive reviews in February. Landon talked a bit about the Josh Ruben-directed flick, saying, “Heart Eyes was like a dream come true. I always wanted to figure out a really violent and scary rom-com, and this was it. I’m so glad that people found it, that they enjoyed it, that it was well-reviewed, and that it did well. We’re really proud of it. We’re hoping we get a sequel, which is just another dream come true. I’m getting to work with amazing people, and I’m just now slowly starting to figure out what I’m gonna do next. But I want it to be a little unexpected.”

Drop is currently showing in theaters via Blumhouse and Universal Pictures. Heart Eyes is now available on Digital, with a Blu-ray and DVD release coming next week via Screen Gems.
