Biography

UGO TOGNAZZI (born March 23, 1922 – October 27, 1990) was an Italian actor and director, as well as a playwright, film and television author. Along with Alberto Sordi, Vittorio Gassman, Nino Manfredi and Marcello Mastroianni, he was one of the pillars of Italian comedy.

Biography and career
In 1950 he made his film debut with a film directed by Mario Mattòli, The Gascony Cadets (I cadetti di Guascogna), together with Walter Chiari. The following year he meets Raimondo Vianello with whom he will form a highly successful comic couple who will work for the newborn Rai TV from 1954 to 1960. What establishes the couple on the small screen is the variety show Un, due, tre.

He has been self-directed in cinema several times (The Kept (Il maintainuto), 1961; The Whistle in the Nose (Il fischio al naso), 1966; Siseñor (Sissignore), 1968; Bad Thoughts (Cattivi pensieri), 1976; The Travelers of the sunset (I viaggiatori della sera), 1979).

In the 1980s he devoted himself above all to the theater, acting in Six Characters in Search of an Author, in Paris (1986) and in The Miser (1988).
He participated in nearly 150 films, sharing the poster and scenes, in many of them, with one or more of the aforementioned Sordi, Gassman, Manfredi and Mastroianni, as well as with other figures of the stature of Philippe Noiret, Michel Piccoli, Claudia Cardinale , Ornella Muti, Catherine Deneuve, Monica Vitti or Mariangela Melato, among others.

Likewise, he worked alongside the great comedy heavyweights who preceded him, such as Totò, Peppino De Filippo, Tina Pica or Aldo Fabrizi and those who would succeed him, such as Paolo Villaggio or Renato Pozzetto.

His acting registers were multiple, alternating roles with different types of humor, from the most histrionic to the most contained, from costumbrista humor to the absurd and even works with a dramatic tone. He boldly signed up for numerous projects of a highly experimental nature, such as several of his works with Ferreri, or films as strange as Pocilga, by Pasolini, or Property is no more a robbery, by Elio Petri.

Death
He died unexpectedly on October 27, 1990 in Rome, at the age of 68, of a brain hemorrhage.
