ROLAND YOUNG (11 de noviembre de 1887 – 5 de junio de 1953) fue un actor teatral y cinematográfico británico.

 

Biografía y carrera

Nacido en LondresInglaterra, Young estudió en la Sherborne School de Sherborne, y en la Universidad de Londres antes de ingresar en la Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Debutó como actor teatral en el circuito de Teatros del West End con la obra Find the Woman en 1908, y en 1912 hizo su primera actuación en el circuito de Broadway con Hindle Wakes. Young actuó en dos comedias escritas para él por Clare KummerGood Gracious Annabelle! (1916) y A Successful Calamity (1917), antes de servir en el Ejército de los Estados Unidos durante la Primera Guerra Mundial, tras obtener la nacionalidad estadounidense. Una vez finalizada la contienda volvió a Nueva York, casándose con la hija de Kummer, Frances. En los siguientes años actuó alternativamente en Nueva York y Londres.

Su debut como actor cinematográfico tuvo lugar en 1922, en el film mudo Sherlock Holmes, en el cual interpretaba a Watson, encarnando John Barrymore a Holmes.

Biography and career

Born in London, England, Young studied at the Sherborne School in Sherborne, and at the University of London before entering the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. He made his debut as a stage actor on the West End theater circuit with the play Find the Woman in 1908, and in 1912 he made his first performance on the Broadway circuit with Hindle Wakes. Young starred in two comedies written for him by Clare Kummer, Good Gracious Annabelle! (1916) and A Successful Calamity (1917), before serving in the United States Army during World War I, after obtaining American citizenship. After the war ended, he returned to New York, marrying Kummer’s daughter, Frances. In the following years he performed alternately in New York and London.

 

His debut as a film actor took place in 1922, in the silent film Sherlock Holmes, in which he played Watson, playing Holmes as John Barrymore.

After being hired by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Young made his first sound film, The Unholy Night (1929), directed by Lionel Barrymore.

 

Young began working as a freelance actor, finding a constant job demand. Thus, she worked with Jeanette MacDonald, Genevieve Tobin and Maurice Chevalier in An hour with you (1932), and with Kay Francis in Street of Women (1932).

 

In 1937 he achieved one of the greatest successes of his career when he played the businessman Cosmo Topper, haunted by the ghosts of his clients, Cary Grant and Constance Bennett. The film was one of the highest grossing of the year, and for his performance Young was nominated for an Oscar for best supporting actor.

 

In the 1950s Young acted in television series such as Lux Video Theater, Studio One, Pulitzer Prize Playhouse, and The Chevrolet Tele-Theater.

 

Roland Young died in 1953 in New York, of natural causes. His remains were cremated, and the ashes handed over to those close to him.
