ROBERT STERLING (nacido William Sterling Hart; New Castle, Pensilvania; 13 de noviembre de 1917–Brentwood Heights, California; 30 de mayo de 2006) fue un actor teatral, cinematográfico y televisivo estadounidense.

Su padre fue el jugador de béisbol del Chicago Cubs William S. Hart. Formado en la Universidad de Pittsburgh, antes de dedicarse a la actuación trabajó vendiendo ropa.
Tras ser contratado por Columbia Pictures en 1939, cambió su nombre por Robert Sterling para evitar la confusión con la estrella del western mudo William S. Hart.
En 1941, Sterling pasó a Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, y durante varios años trabajó de manera continua como actor de reparto. Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial sirvió en el Cuerpo Aéreo del Ejército de los Estados Unidos como instructor de vuelo, volviendo después a Hollywood, aunque a finales de la década su carrera en el cine empezó a decaer. Sin embargo, hizo un papel sin cantar, el de Steve Baker, en el éxito de MGM de 1951 Show Boat, en el cual Ava Gardner encarnaba a Julie.

After being hired by Columbia Pictures in 1939, he changed his name to Robert Sterling to avoid confusion with silent western star William S. Hart.
In 1941, Sterling moved to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, and for several years he worked continuously as a supporting actor. During World War II he served in the United States Army Air Corps as a flight instructor, later returning to Hollywood, although at the end of the decade his film career began to decline. However, he did play an unsung role, that of Steve Baker, in the 1951 MGM hit Show Boat, in which Ava Gardner played Julie.
In 1939 he had acted alongside Shemp Howard, a member of «The Three Stooges,» in the movie «Glove Slingers,» and in 1961 he worked with Moe Howard, Larry Fine, and Curly Joe DeRita on «Fox Movietone News.» In addition, in 1974 he acted in «The 3 Stooges Follies».
Sterling is perhaps best known for his role as George Kerby, starring opposite Jeffreys as Marion Kerby, on the television show Topper, based on the 1937 film of the same name. The show aired on CBS between 1953 and 1955. Leo G. Carroll played the main role.
After some television and film performances in the early 1960s, in productions such as Return to Peyton Place, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea and A Global Affair, Sterling only acted sporadically, appearing on television shows such as Murder, She Wrote (from CBS), Love, American Style and Hotel (the last two from ABC).
