WILLIAM NIGEL ERNLE BRUCE (4 de febrero de 1895 – 8 de octubre de 1953), usualmente conocido como NIGEL BRUCE, fue un actor británico de reparto, que trabajó para el cine y el teatro, y que se hizo famoso como el Doctor Watson en una serie de películas y obras radiofónicas interpretadas junto a Basil Rathbone, este en el papel de Sherlock Holmes.

Su padre fue Sir William Waller Bruce, décimo Baronet (1856 – 1912), por su esposa Angelica Selby (m. 1917.

Su primera actuación teatral tuvo lugar el 12 de mayo de 1920 en el Comedy Theatre como un lacayo en Why Marry?. En octubre de ese año fue a Canadá como director de escena de Henry V. Esmond y Eva Moore, así como interpretando a Montague Jordan en Eliza Comes to Stay. A partir de entonces apareció constantemente en el teatro, y ocho años después empezó a trabajar en el cine mudo. En 1934 se trasladó a Hollywood, afincándose en Beverly Hills.

Durante su carrera cinematográfica trabajó en 78 películas, incluyendo La isla del tesoro (1934), La pimpinela escarlata, Lassie Come Home (La cadena invisible), The Corn is Green, y Bwana Devil. También apareció en las películas de Alfred Hitchcock Rebecca (1940) y Sospecha (1941).

Biography and career
His father was Sir William Waller Bruce, 10th Baronet (1856 – 1912), by his wife Angelica Selby (d. 1917.

His first stage performance was on May 12, 1920 at the Comedy Theater as a footman in Why Marry?. In October of that year he went to Canada as a stage manager for Henry V. Esmond and Eva Moore, as well as playing Montague Jordan in Eliza Comes to Stay. From then on he appeared constantly in the theater, and eight years later he began to work in silent films. In 1934 he moved to Hollywood, settling in Beverly Hills.

During his film career he worked on 78 films, including Treasure Island (1934), The Scarlet Pimpernel, Lassie Come Home (The Invisible Chain), The Corn is Green, and Bwana Devil. He also appeared in the Alfred Hitchcock films Rebecca (1940) and Suspicion (1941).

He used to play buffoonish and clueless gentlemen, and his main role was that of Dr. Watson in the Sherlock Holmes series started in 1939 with his good friend Basil Rathbone. Unlike some of his contemporaries, he never renounced his British citizenship, despite his long residence in the United States, and retained his membership of the London clubs Garrick Club and Bucks Club until his death.

His last film, World for Ransom, was released posthumously in 1954.

Bruce died of an acute myocardial infarction in Santa Monica, California, in 1953, at the age of 58. He was cremated, and his ashes kept at the Chapel of the Pines Crematorium in Los Angeles.
