Biography and career
Born Mona Barlee Smith in London, the daughter of comedian Phil Smith and variety performer Jessie Barlee, she lived in Australia since 1913 and made her professional debut as Mona Barlee on stage in a 1922 JC Williamson production of The Merry Widow. For the next ten years he performed for JC Williamson, primarily in musical comedies and gained a popular reputation, appearing with numerous Australian-based variety stars, including Roy Rene. He also appeared in his first film, His Royal Highness, with Australian comedian George Wallace. In 1933 he emigrated to New York, auditioned for movies and this led to signing with Fox Film Corporation. He made his first American film Sleepers East under the stage name Mona Barrie.
While her lack of glamorous beauty resulted in her being generally cast in major but supporting roles, during a nearly twenty-year film career she appeared in more than fifty films. He co-starred in 1942’s Dawn on the Great Divide, the last film Buck Jones made before he died in the Cocoanut Grove fire in Boston, Massachusetts. Barrie also performed at various gambling dens in the US, debuting on Broadway in 1937 as Lady Agatha in Arthur Schwartz’s Virginia.
Barrie died in 1964 in Los Angeles, at age 54, of undisclosed causes. She and Bolton are buried together in Knox United Church Cemetery in Agincourt, Toronto.
