Martin nació en Filadelfia, Pensilvania , hija de un ejecutivo de Bethlehem Steel. Se convirtió en actriz después de que la fortuna de su familia se perdiera en el Wall Street Crash de 1929 , y apareció en las producciones de Broadway Lombardi Ltd. y Sweet Adeline.

Biography and career

Martin was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the daughter of a Bethlehem Steel executive. She became an actress after her family fortune was lost in the 1929 Wall Street Crash, and she appeared in the Broadway productions Lombardi Ltd. and Sweet Adeline.

She made her film debut in She’s My Lillie, I’m Her Willie and subsequently played minor roles, often as backup singers. Several of her early roles were in musicals and she achieved some success as a singer. By the end of the decade she had played leading female roles in several «B» pictures, playing one of her most notable roles in James Whale’s Sinners in Paradise (1938).

In the late 1940s, their roles were usually minor. Fans of Three Stooges will remember her as the western cowgirl Gladys in Merry Mavericks. She played «Belle Farnol» in a 1950 episode of The Lone Ranger titled «Sorry for Curley.» Soon after, she made her last film appearance in 1952. Married to a physicist, Martin retired and, although she expressed a desire to return to show business, she was not offered suitable roles.

 

Death

She died of cardiac arrest in 1985 in Los Angeles, California, and was buried in Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City, California.
