Su verdadero nombre era Margaret Kies, y nació en Dubuque, Iowa. Era la mayor de cinco hermanos. Su padre era un farmacéutico que falleció en 1930, antes de que ella iniciara su carrera en Hollywood. Lindsay se graduó en 1930 en la Visitation Academy de Dubuque.
Tras algunos papeles menores, fue seleccionada por 20th Century Fox para trabajar en Cavalcade (Cabalgata). Lindsay interpretó a Edith Harris, una novia inglesa cuyo viaje nupcial tiene lugar en el Titanic. Lindsay ganó el papel gracias a su acento británico y a una trabajada «biografía» que decía que ella había nacido en un suburbio londinense.
Actuó con Bette Davis en cuatro películas de Warner Bros.: como rival de Davis en Jezabel (1938), como hermana de Davis en la olvidada joya de 1934 Fog Over Frisco, y dos filmes de 1935, Dangerous y Bordertown. En el último, el papel masculino protagonista lo interpretaba Paul Muni.
Quizás el mejor papel de Lindsay fue el que interpretó en The House of the Seven Gables en 1940, con George Sanders y Vincent Price, y dirigida por Joe May a partir de un guion de Lester Cole.

Her real name was Margaret Kies, and she was born in Dubuque, Iowa. She was the oldest of five siblings. Her father was a pharmacist who passed away in 1930, before she began her career in Hollywood. Lindsay graduated in 1930 from the Visitation Academy in Dubuque.
After some minor roles, she was selected by 20th Century Fox to work on Cavalcade (Cabalgata). Lindsay played Edith Harris, an English bride whose wedding voyage takes place on the Titanic. Lindsay won the role thanks to her British accent and an elaborate «biography» that said she was born in a London suburb.
She acted with Bette Davis in four Warner Bros. movies: as Davis’s rival in Jezebel (1938), as Davis’s sister in the long-forgotten 1934 gem Fog Over Frisco, and two 1935 films, Dangerous and Bordertown. In the latter, the lead male role was played by Paul Muni.
Perhaps Lindsay’s best role was the one she played in The House of the Seven Gables in 1940, with George Sanders and Vincent Price, and directed by Joe May from a screenplay by Lester Cole.
He made his television debut in 1950 with The Importance of Being Ernesto, in which he again used his elegant British accent. This performance was followed by several others in the same medium.
