LILIAN FONTAINE, was an English actress and mother of the Oscar-winning actresses, Dame Olivia de Havilland and Joan Fontaine.
Fontaine was born in Reading, Berkshire. He received a scholarship from Reading College at age 13 for his musical talents and studied acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London.
In 1922, the family moved to California in the hope that the climate would improve the health of the daughters, who suffered from «recurring ailments.» De Havilland soon returned to Japan, while his wife and daughters stayed in Saratoga, California, until 1933.
In April 1925, she married department store manager George M. Fontaine. They were married until her death in 1956. She lived with her two daughters in Saratoga, California, and encouraged them to pursue an acting career.
Fontaine trained theater students when he lived in Saratoga, California, and produced plays at a garden theater that later received his name.
From 1948 to 1958, Fontaine taught an acting class that became the Los Gatos Theater workshop.
Fontaine died on February 20, 1975 of cancer at the age of 88.
