A finales de 1917 Dane actuó en su primer film. Fue un pequeño papel en un corto de Vitagraph Studios, filmado en Fort Lee, Nueva Jersey. Sus escenas en este corto fueron cortadas, y se desconoce el título del mismo: probablemente se haya perdido.
Dane actuó después en un film de carácter antigermánico de Warner Brothers, My Four Years in Germany, en el papel del ‘Canciller von Bethmann-Hollweg’. At the end of 1917 Dane acted in his first film. It was a small role in a Vitagraph Studios short, filmed in Fort Lee, New Jersey. His scenes in this short were cut, and the title of the film is unknown: it has probably been lost.
Dane later starred in an anti-Germanic Warner Brothers film, My Four Years in Germany, in the role of ‘Chancellor von Bethmann-Hollweg’. This would be the first of many similar roles in Dane’s early career. The film was released on April 29, 1918 and was a box office success, grossing almost nine times its budget.
In December 1924, MGM casting director Robert McIntyre recommended Dane for a role in King Vidor’s latest project. Dane played Slim in The Great Parade, alongside John Gilbert and Renée Adorée. The film was a huge success, being the second highest grossing silent film of all time.
Dane & Arthur’s last silent short was Detectives, shot in 1928. On December 23, 1928 their first talking film, Brotherly Love, was released. Arthur had a fair British accent, but Dane’s heavy Danish accent made it difficult to understand his English. For this reason, the couple only made six more sound titles, the last being China Bound in 1929.
By the end of 1933 Dane had acquired a hot dog stand outside MGM studios. The business failed as he was shunned by his former friends. Dane later tried to work in his previous studio as an extra or carpenter but was not accepted.
