Biography and career
Born in Wheathampstead, England, Owen trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art directed by Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree, making his professional debut in 1905. In 1920 he traveled to the United States, initially working as a stage actor on the Broadway circuit in New York. York, and later moving on to Hollywood, where he began a long film career, becoming a familiar face to the public thanks to his multiple performances for MGM.
Owen is perhaps best known today for his performance as Ebenezer Scrooge in the 1938 version of Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol. Owen inherited the character after breaking a hip from Lionel Barrymore, who had played Scrooge on radio for many Christmases.
In the last years of his career, Owen acted alongside James Garner in the television series Maverick, in the episodes “The Belcastle Brand” (1957) and “Gun-Shy” (1958), as well as in an episode of the series ” One Step Beyond “.
