JOHN NICHOLAS CASSAVETES, más conocido como JOHN CASSAVETES (Nueva York, 9 de diciembre de 1929–Los Ángeles, 3 de febrero de 1989) fue un actor, guionista y director estadounidense. Se lo considera un pionero del cine independiente y uno de los máximos representantes del cine independiente estadounidense.

John Cassavetes nació en Nueva York de padres inmigrantes griegos; su padre, Nicholas, llegó en 1908 y se casó en 1926, con una griega quince años más joven.
Cassavetes dirigió dos largometrajes en Hollywood a comienzos de los años 1960: Too Late Blues y A Child is Waiting (1963), que trata en profundidad el tema del retraso mental. En ella Jean Hansen (Judy Garland), profesora de música en un colegio de niños deficientes mentales, conoce a Reuben, un niño con problemas al que sus padres no visitan desde hace años; Jean lo colmará de atenciones y mimos a pesar de que el director del centro (Burt Lancaster) considera que su actitud es contraproducente.
En los años 1970, realiza las que serían consideradas sus tres mejores películas: Una mujer bajo la influencia (1974), por la que Cassavetes fue candidato al Oscar a la mejor dirección y su mujer fue candidata al Oscar a la mejor actriz; en ella una familia feliz empieza a sentir el desarrollo de una enfermedad mental en la madre. Biography and career
John Cassavetes was born in New York to Greek immigrant parents; his father, Nicholas, arrived in 1908 and married a Greek girl fifteen years younger in 1926.
Cassavetes directed two feature films in Hollywood in the early 1960s: Too Late Blues and A Child is Waiting (1963), which deal in depth with the subject of mental retardation. In it Jean Hansen (Judy Garland), a music teacher at a school for mentally handicapped children, meets Reuben, a troubled boy whose parents have not visited for years; Jean will shower him with attention and pampering despite the fact that the director of the center (Burt Lancaster) considers that his attitude is counterproductive.
In the 1970s, he made what would be considered his three best films: A Woman Under the Influence (1974), for which Cassavetes was a candidate for the Oscar for best director and his wife was a candidate for the Oscar for best actress; in her a happy family begins to feel the development of a mental illness in the mother. And even so, life goes on: tenderness and love, according to Cassavetes. The Killing of a Chinese Bookie (1976) and Opening Night (1977). All of these three films were produced independently.
Cassavetes also developed his acting career, participating in films such as Twelve from the Gallows (1967), for which he was a candidate for the Academy Award for best supporting actor, and Roman Polanski’s Rosemary’s Baby (1968). Other notable films in his acting career were Don Siegel’s The Killers (1964) and The Fury (1978). In the following decade he made three outstanding films: Gloria (1980), Love Streams (1984) and, what would be his last film, Big Trouble (1986).
Cassavetes died of cirrhosis of the liver in 1989, at age 59. His remains are in the Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles, California.
