JAMES KING AURNESS (26 de mayo de 1923 – 3 de junio de 2011), más conocido como James Arness, fue un actor estadounidense. Es reconocido por interpretar al Márshal Matt Dillon en la serie de televisión Gunsmoke durante veinte años. Fue hermano del también actor Peter Graves.

Su nombre real era James Aurness y nació en Mineápolis, Minnesota, Estados Unidos. Su padre era de ascendencia noruega y su madre de ascendencia alemana.
Su primera película fue en 1947, The Farmer’s Daughter, seguida de Man From Texas de 1947, Horizons West y Big Jim McLain de 1952. Su primer éxito cinematográfico fue en la película del oeste Hondo (1954), acompañando a John Wayne, y apareció en dos clásicos de la ciencia ficción cinematográfica: The Thing from Another World (1951), donde interpretaba a la cosa llegada del espacio, y Them! (1953).

JAMES KING AURNESS (May 26, 1923 – June 3, 2011), better known as James Arness, was an American actor. He is recognized for playing Marshal Matt Dillon on the television series Gunsmoke for twenty years. He was the brother of fellow actor Peter Graves.

His real name was James Aurness and he was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States. His father was of Norwegian descent and his mother of German descent.
His first film was in 1947, The Farmer’s Daughter, followed by Man From Texas in 1947, Horizons West and Big Jim McLain in 1952. His first cinematic success was in the western film Hondo (1954), accompanying John Wayne, and appeared in two classics of film science fiction: The Thing from Another World (1951), where he played the thing from space, and Them! (1953).
On television, he guest-starred in two episodes of The Lone Ranger, playing curator Bud Titus. He starred in the miniseries Conquest of the West (1976–1977), as Zebulon «Zeb» Macahan, and the television westerns The Alamo: 13 Days to Glory (1987), as Jim Bowie, and the remake of Red River (Red River ) (1988).
Death
He died on June 3, 2011, he was 88 years old.
