Biografía y carrera
Empezó interpretando a personajes secundarios en películas como el musical cómico-dramático Marino al agua (1953), La rubia fenómeno (1954), Pfhht! (1954), Mi hermana Elena (1955), Fuego escondido (1957) o Cowboy (1958). Por su trabajo en Escala en Hawaii (1955) gana su primer premio Óscar, en este caso al mejor actor secundario.

En Operación Gran baile (1957) obtuvo su primer papel coprotagonista y en Me enamoré de una bruja (1958) compartió cartel con Kim Novak y James Stewart. Pero, fue con Con faldas y a lo loco (1959) cuando empezó su éxito y también su primera película con el que sería su director fetiche: Billy Wilder. En ella se travestía de cantante junto con Tony Curtis para esconderse de unos pandilleros que querían asesinarles. Una vez en sus nuevas identidades conocen a una ingenua cantante, interpretada por Marilyn Monroe, y el personaje de Curtis se enamora de ella.
