His Jewish parents were Flora Craft, a Russian immigrant, and Leo Albertson, a Polish immigrant. He had a sister, Mabel Albertson, also an actress. Albertson dropped out of school and traveled to New York in an attempt to gain a foothold in show business.
Albertson soon worked in the burlesque genre as a dancer and performing alongside Phil Silvers in a comedy couple at Minsky’s Burlesque Circuit. In addition to vaudeville and burlesque, he performed on stage in many Broadway plays, including High Button Shoes, Top Banana, The Cradle Will Rock, Make Mine Manhattan, Show Boat, Boy Meets Girl, Girl Crazy, Meet the People, The Sunshine Boys (for which he received a Tony nomination for Best Actor, and The Subject was Roses (for which he won a Tony for Best Supporting Actor). He was also known for two radio shows, Just Plain Bill and The Jack Albertson. Comedy Show.
Jack Albertson also had a prolific film career, most of it playing supporting roles.

Albertson was married to Wallace (Wally) Thompson and had a daughter, Maura. He resided for years in West Hollywood, California. In 1978 he was diagnosed with colon cancer, but he withheld this information and continued to act. He made a movie for the cinema, My Body, My Child (1982), and another for television, Grandpa, Will You Run With Me? (1982), which were released posthumously.
Death
Jack Albertson passed away on November 25, 1981 from this cancer. He was cremated, and his ashes were scattered in the Pacific Ocean.
