GEORGE SEGAL, JR. (Nueva York, 13 de febrero de 1934-Santa Rosa, 23 de marzo de 2021) fue un actor estadounidense, ganador del Globo de Oro.

Biografía y carrera
Nació en Great Neck, Long Island, en el estado de Nueva York. En 1955 Segal debutó en el teatro con la obra Don Juan, de Molière. Al año siguiente actuó en otra obra, esta vez de Eugene O’Neill. A continuación tuvo que cumplir el servicio militar. A su regreso, consiguió participar en el festival Shakespeare de Nueva York, hasta que en 1960 tuvo su primer éxito importante en The Premise, una obra con características de revista, que estuvo en cartel durante un plazo prolongado.

En 1961, Segal actuó en su primera película. En los años siguientes hizo varias películas más, aunque en todos los casos en papeles pequeños. En la película de Stanley Kramer de 1965 Ship of Fools ya comenzó a ser conocido. Sin embargo, fue con la película de ese mismo año King Rat, una historia sobre la Segunda Guerra Mundial, con el que saltó a la fama como actor de cine. Sus dotes de interpretación fueron extensos, y era capaz de actuar en papeles cómicos con la misma facilidad que en papeles dramáticos. Su aspecto risueño le hizo ganar la simpatía de las audiencias.

Segal fue introduciéndose también en la televisión, aunque hasta la década de los años 90 no comenzó a trabajar en serio en este medio. Desde entonces intervino regularmente en una o dos producciones de películas o mini-series para la televisión cada año, hasta el extremo de que parecía sentirse más a gusto en este medio que en el cine. Con sus intervenciones en televisión cosechó también notable éxito.

Segal falleció el 23 de marzo del 2021, a sus 87 años debido a complicaciones por una cirugía de ‘baipás’. Lo confirmó su esposa.

Biography and career
He was born in Great Neck, Long Island, in the state of New York. In 1955 Segal made his theater debut in Molière’s Don Juan. The following year he acted in another play, this time by Eugene O’Neill. He then had to do military service. Upon his return, he managed to participate in the New York Shakespeare festival, until in 1960 he had his first major success in The Premise, a play with magazine characteristics, which was on the bill for a long time.

In 1961, Segal acted in his first film. In the following years he made several more films, although in all cases in small roles. In Stanley Kramer’s 1965 film Ship of Fools he already began to be known. However, it was with the film of the same year King Rat, a story about World War II, with which he rose to fame as a film actor. While shooting those films, Segal continued to act in the theater, where he also worked with director Mike Nichols, with whom he coincided in 1966 on the set of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, a film that garnered several Oscars.

In the following years, Segal appeared in a multitude of films, usually in important leading or supporting roles. His acting skills were extensive, and he was able to perform comedic roles with equal ease as dramatic ones. His smiling appearance made him win the sympathy of the audiences.

Segal was also introduced to television, although it was not until the 1990s that he began to work seriously in this medium. Since then, he regularly took part in one or two productions of films or mini-series for television each year, to the point that he seemed to feel more comfortable in this medium than in the cinema. With his interventions on television he also achieved notable success.

Segal passed away on March 23, 2021, at the age of 87 due to complications from bypass surgery. His wife confirmed it.
