FRANCES ELENA FARMER (Seattle, 19 de septiembre de 1913–Indianápolis, 1 de agosto de 1970) fue una actriz estadounidense de cine, teatro y televisión.
Biografía y carrera
Frances nació el 19 de septiembre de 1913 en Seattle, Washington, hija menor de Ernest Melvin Farmer, un abogado, y Lillian Farmer (de soltera, Van Ornum; 1873-1955).
Estudió drama en la Universidad de Washington y compaginó los estudios con actuaciones en las obras teatrales organizadas por la universidad. En 1935 ganó un concurso para suscriptores del periódico de izquierdas The Voice of Action. El primer premio era un viaje a la Unión Soviética, que ella aceptó a pesar de la fuerte objeción de su madre, para poder ver el pionero Teatro de Arte de Moscú. Tal interés fomentó el rumor de que además de atea era comunista. A su regreso en verano del mismo año, se detuvo en Nueva York, para comenzar realmente una carrera como actriz de teatro. Sin embargo, fue descubierta por un cazatalentos hollywoodiense que le ofreció en la Paramount un contrato de siete años; Farmer, que contaba veintidós, se mudó a Hollywood y se casó con el actor Leif Erickson. Frances was born on September 19, 1913, in Seattle, Washington, the youngest daughter of Ernest Melvin Farmer, a lawyer, and Lillian Farmer (née Van Ornum; 1873-1955).
He studied drama at the University of Washington and combined his studies with performances in theater plays organized by the university. In 1935 he won a contest for subscribers to the left-wing newspaper The Voice of Action. The first prize was a trip to the Soviet Union, which she accepted over her mother’s strong objection, in order to see the pioneering Moscow Art Theater. Such interest fostered the rumor that in addition to being an atheist, she was a communist. Upon her return in the summer of the same year, she stopped in New York, to actually begin a career as a stage actress. However, she was discovered by a Hollywood scout who offered her a seven-year contract at Paramount; Farmer, who was twenty-two, moved to Hollywood and married actor Leif Erickson. Her proud and stubborn character made her quickly lose her popularity in Hollywood, which led her back to the theater, which she would later combine with the cinema, again at Paramount. In 1942, she divorced Erickson.
Later she worked on television, especially in the program Frances Farmer presents (1958-1964) where she was shown as a gracious hostess. Her last performance was in the stage play The Visit in 1965. She had been fired from television for her erratic behavior again. Farmer and his friend Jean Ratcliffe tried to start a cosmetics company but the project failed when their investor misappropriated the funds. He died in 1970, at the age of 56, of esophageal cancer due to his smoking. She is buried in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Fishers, Indiana.
