Tenía la costumbre de presentarse como mexicana y frecuentemente usaba alias como Una Novella y Rita Novella, normalmente interpretando roles latinos en sus películas. Bajo el nombre artístico de Rita Rio, Dona lideró una orquesta conformada exclusivamente por mujeres a comienzos de la década de 1940, también conocida como «Dona Drake and her Girl Band». Entre 1935 y 1955, Drake actuó en más de treinta producciones de cine y televisión, apareciendo en varios westerns a comienzos de la década de 1950.
Drake murió a causa de un fallo respiratorio en Los Ángeles, California, el 20 de junio de 1989, a los 74 años. Fue cremada y sus cenizas fueron esparcidas en el mar.

She had a habit of presenting herself as Mexican and frequently used aliases such as Una Novella and Rita Novella, usually playing Latino roles in her films. Under the stage name Rita Rio, Dona led an all-female orchestra in the early 1940s, also known as «Dona Drake and her Girl Band.» Between 1935 and 1955, Drake acted in more than thirty film and television productions, appearing in various westerns in the early 1950s.
Drake died of respiratory failure in Los Angeles, California, on June 20, 1989, at age 74. It was cremated and its ashes were scattered in the sea.
