DENNISTOUN FRANKLYN JOHN ROSE PRICE, conocido artísticamente como DENNIS PRICE (23 de junio de 1915 – 6 de octubre de 1973) fue un actor inglés, mejor recordado por su papel de Louis Mazzini en la película Ocho sentencias de muerte y por su interpretación del omnisciente ayuda de cámara Jeeves en las adaptaciones televisivas de la década de 1960 de las historias de P. G. Wodehouse.
Biografía y carrera
Hijo de un general, Dennis Price estaba inicialmente destinado a una carrera eclesiástica pero, después de asistir a la Universidad de Oxford, se matriculó en la Embassy School of Acting para estudiar actuación.
A partir de 1938 se embarcó en una carrera cinematográfica larga e inicialmente exitosa. Dado de baja del ejército británico en 1942 por discapacidad, volvió a actuar en el teatro donde fue descubierto por el director de cine Michael Powell, quien le confió su primer papel protagónico, el de un joven soldado, en A Canterbury Tale (1944).
Si bien logró un éxito inmediato, en los años siguientes Price tuvo pocas oportunidades de aparecer en películas de la misma importancia, a pesar de participar en un número infinito de películas producidas en Inglaterra e interpretar principalmente personajes sarcásticos y refinados. Entre sus papeles más memorables se encuentran el del pariente pobre asesino en la clásica comedia Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949) y los personajes secundarios pero muy importantes que interpretó en Victim (1961) y The Wrong Arm of the Law (1963).
Aunque había logrado un éxito considerable en la pantalla chica, interpretando el papel del mayordomo Jeeves, nacido de la pluma de P.G. The son of a general, Dennis Price was initially destined for an ecclesiastical career but, after attending Oxford University, he enrolled at the Embassy School of Acting to study acting.
From 1938 he embarked on a long and initially successful film career. Discharged from the British Army in 1942 due to disability, he returned to acting in the theater where he was discovered by film director Michael Powell, who entrusted him with his first leading role, that of a young soldier, in A Canterbury Tale (1944).
Although he achieved immediate success, in the following years Price had few opportunities to appear in films of the same importance, despite participating in an infinite number of films produced in England and playing mainly sarcastic and refined characters. Among his most memorable roles are that of the murderous poor relative in the classic comedy Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949) and the supporting but very important characters he played in Victim (1961) and The Wrong Arm of the Law (1963).
Although he had achieved considerable success on the small screen, playing the role of the butler Jeeves, born from the pen of P.G. Wodehouse, in a popular television series produced by the BBC, Price saw his film career decline during the 1960s and end his participation in a series of low-cost horror films, some directed by Jesús Franco.
Death
He died of cirrhosis of the liver in 1973 at the age of 58. He is buried on the island of Sark.
