The San Diego Stock Company gave Cummings his first opportunity to act in a «walk-in role» playing a prostitute in a 1926 production of Seventh Heaven. She made her Broadway debut as a showgirl, a member of the ensemble in Treasure Girl (1928) at the age of 18.
While appearing on Broadway, she was discovered by Samuel Goldwyn, who brought her to Hollywood in 1931. Between 1931 and 1934, Cummings appeared in more than 20 films, including Movie Crazy opposite Harold Lloyd and American Madness, directed by Frank Capra.
She was married to playwright and screenwriter Benn Levy from July 3, 1933 until his death in 1973. As Levy was from Great Britain, Cummings moved there and continued to act, both in film and on stage, in Great Britain. . Few of his films were successful in the United States, although Blithe Spirit, an adaptation of Noël Coward’s play, was popular. Levy went on to write and direct films for Cummings, such as The Jealous God (1939); he also served in the UK Parliament from 1945 to 1950 as a Labor MP for Eton and Slough. They had a son and a daughter.
She played Mary Tyrone in the Royal National Theater production of Eugene O’Neill’s Long Day’s Journey into Night, opposite Laurence Olivier, and later recreated the role for television. It also originated the role of Martha in Edward Albee’s Fear of Virginia Woolf Who in her London debut.
