BILLY WILDER, was a six-time Oscar-winning American film director, screenwriter, and producer of Austrian-Jewish origin (one for producer, two for best director, and three for best screenwriter).

Wilder and Lorre shared an apartment, hunger and very difficult moments during a season. He even had to be in Mexico for six months when his visa expired, an episode that he transferred to the script he wrote for Mitchell Leisen in 1941 If No Dawn. He became an American citizen in 1939.

He began working as a screenwriter for Paramount, and had the opportunity to collaborate with Ernst Lubitsch, his great teacher. Wilder and his colleague and friend William Wyler attended his funeral, among others. On leaving it, both commented: «We have run out of Lubitsch.» «Worse still, we have run out of Lubitsch films.»

His first success as a screenwriter was precisely when he wrote the screenplay for Lubitsch Ninotchka’s 1939 play. This romantic comedy starring Greta Garbo (an actress best known for her dramatic roles) was acclaimed by critics and audiences.

With the hook of «Garbo laughs!», He gave Garbo the possibility to take another direction in his career. This earned Wilder his first Oscar nomination, which he shared with his partner Charles Brackett. From 1938 to 1950, Wilder wrote many of his screenplays with him. After Ninotchka he was followed by a series of commercial successes such as Si no amaneciera and Bola de fuego, as well as his Hollywood directorial debut, El bachelor y la menor.
