Biography

Manuel Antonio Rodolfo Quinn Oaxaca was born on April 21, 1915 in Chihuahua, Mexico. According to the actor, his parents were Francisco Quinn, of Irish origin, and Manuela Oaxaca, a Mexican descendant of Aztecs. His father had participated in the Mexican Revolution and there he met what would be his mother.

Because of his «multi-ethnic» appearance and his stint in boxing in his features, he continued to play supporting roles as a native American, Italian mobster, gangster, Chinese, Arab, Filipino, and Hispanic throughout the 1940s. He made about 15 films , pigeonholing himself in roles of thug, villain and characters of dubious reputation. This transcended in real life, and the high society of Hollywood at the time did not admit him in their circles, discriminating against him.

He received his second Oscar for best supporting actor in 1956, for his role as the painter Paul Gauguin in the film The Fool with Red Hair, by director Vincente Minnelli, about the life of Vincent Van Gogh. It is noteworthy to mention that Quinn only appears for eight minutes in the film. The main role was played by Kirk Douglas, with whom he had collaborated on the film Ulysses in 1954, and with whom he would also collaborate in the 1959 film Last Train from Gun Hill.

In 1956 he made a remarkable performance of Quasimodo in the film Notre Dame de Paris, along with Gina Lollobrigida. In 1958 he himself directed a new version of the film The Buccaneer (The Buccaneer), in which he had participated in a supporting role in 1938. This second version would be his only participation as a film director.

In the 1980s, he participated in a dozen films, without much notoriety. At this time he devoted himself mainly to his great passion: painting and sculpture in bronze and marble, where he earns money from his exhibitions.

Death

He died accompanied by his last wife and children in a Boston hospital in 2001, at the age of 86.
