Sus padres fueron Juan D\u00e1vila y Gervasia Cu\u00e9llar. Obtuvo la licenciatura en Jurisprudencia en la Universidad Nacional de Hondurasen 1880, ejerci\u00e9ndose de Abogado y notario. Debido a su clara oposici\u00f3n al gobierno del General Ponciano Leiva y Domingo V\u00e1squez, se traslada a radicar en Nicaragua donde se desempe\u00f1a en labores administrativas y profesionales. Contrajo nupcias con Narcisa Romero Portillo el 3 de noviembre de 1894.
