Hija de Jos\u00e9 Abraham Pizarro y Blanca Hortensia Soto Figueroa, Gabriela Pizarro naci\u00f3 en Lebu el 14 de octubre de 1932. Sus primeros acercamientos a la realidad y costumbres tradicionales los vivi\u00f3 al acompa\u00f1ar a su padre a cobrar arriendo a los inquilinos que viv\u00edan en su propiedad. Fue en estas visitas en las que conoci\u00f3, el velorio del angelito, la cama redonda, el oficio de los hierbateros y otras costumbres t\u00edpicas. A \u00e9stas se sum\u00f3 la fundamental influencia de su nana, Elba Gonz\u00e1lez, cantora de chinganas.<\/div>\r\n

En 1939 se traslad\u00f3 con su familia a Santiago, instal\u00e1ndose en la Calle Caupolic\u00e1n de \u00d1u\u00f1oa. Se inscribi\u00f3 en la Escuela Normal N\u00ba 2, donde particip\u00f3 en el grupo musical del colegio y tom\u00f3 clases de guitarra con la profesora Isabel Soro, gracias a quien entr\u00f3 a un curso dictado por Margot Loyola en una escuela de verano de la Universidad de Chile. All\u00ed conoci\u00f3 a Silvia Urbina, Jaime Rojas, Rolando Alarc\u00f3n y V\u00edctor Jara, entre muchos otros. Fue \u00e9ste el gran incentivo para que Gabriela Pizarro desarrollara su labor como investigadora, educadora e int\u00e9rprete del folclor chileno.<\/div>\r\n

En 1958 fund\u00f3 el grupo Millaray. Con este conjunto se present\u00f3 hacia 1960 en el Teatro Municipal de Santiago, donde se dio a conocer un profundo trabajo de investigaci\u00f3n sobre Chilo\u00e9, el cual recopil\u00f3 bailes como: el pavo, el cielito, la trastasera, la pericona y muchos otros. Fue en el grupo donde conoci\u00f3, en 1959, a quien ser\u00eda su esposo adem\u00e1s de un importante folclorista: H\u00e9ctor Pav\u00e9z.<\/div>\r\n

Con el grupo Millaray grab\u00f3 5 discos de larga duraci\u00f3n. La labor conjunta se prolong\u00f3 sostenidamente hasta el a\u00f1o 1973 cuando, producto del golpe de Estado, muchos de sus integrantes, incluyendo a Gabriela Pizarro, fueron perseguidos pol\u00edticos.<\/div>\r\n

Despu\u00e9s de 1973, y de la muerte en el exilio de H\u00e9ctor Pav\u00e9z, su situaci\u00f3n se hizo m\u00e1s delicada; debi\u00f3 tocar en pe\u00f1as, iglesias e incluso en la Vega. Sin embargo, a poco andar, recibi\u00f3 invitaciones de exiliados que la animaban a dar a conocer su trabajo en el extranjero. As\u00ed, visit\u00f3 Francia e Inglaterra en 1978, donde fue nombrada miembro del Instituto de Canto y Danza Brit\u00e1nica; Holanda, Espa\u00f1a y Finlandia en 1985 y Canad\u00e1 en 1987.<\/div>\r\n

En 1987 retom\u00f3 su labor como investigadora, particularmente sobre el romance. As\u00ed, bajo el alero de la Universidad de Chile, grab\u00f3 el casete Romances Cantados. Un a\u00f1o m\u00e1s tarde public\u00f3 Cuadernos de terreno, donde plasm\u00f3 gran parte de su labor investigativa.<\/div>\r\n

Con la vuelta a la democracia Gabriela Pizarro recibi\u00f3 una pensi\u00f3n de gracia que le dio cierta tranquilidad econ\u00f3mica; edit\u00f3 su libro Veinte tonadas religiosas, y fue presidente de la Asociaci\u00f3n Nacional del Folclor de Chile, ANFOLCHI, entre muchas otras actividades que fueron truncadas por su muerte el 29 de diciembre de 1999.<\/div>\r\n

Daughter of Jos\u00e9 Abraham Pizarro and Blanca Hortensia Soto Figueroa, Gabriela Pizarro was born in Lebu on October 14, 1932. She lived her first approaches to reality and traditional customs when she accompanied her father to collect rent from the tenants who lived in her property. It was during these visits that she met the wake of the little angel, the round bed, the trade of the herb-growers and other typical customs. To these was added the fundamental influence of her lullaby, Elba Gonz\u00e1lez, a chingana singer.<\/div>\r\n

In 1939 she moved with her family to Santiago, settling in Calle Caupolic\u00e1n de \u00d1u\u00f1oa. She enrolled in Normal School No. 2, where she participated in the School’s musical group and took guitar lessons with teacher Isabel Soro, thanks to whom she entered a course taught by Margot Loyola in a summer school at the University From Chile. There she met Silvia Urbina, Jaime Rojas, Rolando Alarc\u00f3n and V\u00edctor Jara, among many others. This was the great incentive for Gabriela Pizarro to develop her work as a researcher, educator and interpreter of Chilean folklore.<\/div>\r\n

In 1958 she founded the Millaray group. With this group, she performed around 1960 at the Municipal Theater of Santiago, where a profound research work on Chilo\u00e9 was released, which collected dances such as: the Turkey, the cielito, the trastasera, the pericona and many others. It was in the group where she met, in 1959, who would be her husband as well as an important folklorist: H\u00e9ctor Pavez.<\/div>\r\n

With the group Millaray she recorded 5 full-length albums. The joint efforts continued steadily until 1973 when, as a result of the coup, many of its members, including Gabriela Pizarro, were politically persecuted.<\/div>\r\n

After 1973, and the death in exile of H\u00e9ctor Pav\u00e9z, his situation became more delicate; she must have played in pe\u00f1as, churches and even in La Vega. However, shortly afterwards, she received invitations from exiles who encouraged her to make her work known abroad. Thus, she visited France and England in 1978, where she was appointed a member of the Institute of British Song and Dance; She Holland, Spain and Finland in 1985 and Canada in 1987.<\/div>\r\n

In 1987 she resumed her work as a researcher, particularly on romance. Thus, under the eaves of the University of Chile, she recorded the cassette Romances Cantados. A year later she published Field Notebooks, where she captured much of her investigative work.<\/div>\r\n
