Se le conoce principalmente por sus canciones de refinada armon\u00eda, deudoras en parte de Ant\u00f4nio Carlos Jobim, y por sus letras, que oscilan entre una tem\u00e1tica de car\u00e1cter intimista, hasta cuestiones como la situaci\u00f3n cultural, econ\u00f3mica y social de Brasil. A lo largo de su vida ha ido alternando su carrera musical con la de novelista y dramaturgo. Sus tres \u00faltimas novelas, Budapeste (2005), Leite derramado (2009) y El hermano alem\u00e1n (2016), han sido muy aclamadas y merecedoras del importante Premio Jabuti. Tambi\u00e9n ha sido galardonado con el Premio Cam\u00f5es, entre otros premios literarios.<\/div>\n

Naci\u00f3 en el seno de una familia intelectual y privilegiada. Su padre, Sergio Buarque de Hollanda, era un conocido historiador y soci\u00f3logo. Buarque fue un ni\u00f1o estudioso con un inter\u00e9s precoz en la m\u00fasica y la escritura. Desde temprano le impresion\u00f3 la m\u00fasica, sobre todo la bossa nova y en especial el trabajo de Jo\u00e3o Gilberto.<\/div>\n

El debut p\u00fablico de Buarque como m\u00fasico y compositor ocurri\u00f3 en 1964 y pronto se hizo una reputaci\u00f3n a trav\u00e9s de su participaci\u00f3n en festivales musicales y programas de televisi\u00f3n. Su primer \u00e1lbum, Chico Buarque, mostraba el trabajo por venir, con sambas pegadizos, caracterizados por juegos de palabras creativos y un trasfondo de nostalgia tr\u00e1gica.<\/div>\n

Despu\u00e9s del Golpe de Estado en Brasil de 1964, Chico empez\u00f3 a escribir sobre la situaci\u00f3n y evit\u00f3 la censura al usar analog\u00edas cr\u00edpticas y juegos de palabras. Su cada vez mayor actividad pol\u00edtica y su colaboraci\u00f3n con cineastas, dramaturgos y m\u00fasicos en trabajos que protestaban contra la dictadura militar de Brasil le vali\u00f3 ser arrestado en 1968 y lo movi\u00f3 al exilio a Italia en 1969. Chico Buarque regres\u00f3 a Brasil en 1970, donde emple\u00f3 su fama y habilidad para escribir canciones como protesta contra la dictadura. Un ejemplo de ello fue la canci\u00f3n “C\u00e1lice” (1973), que fue compuesta por el en conjunto con Gilberto Gil, ya que juega con las palabras portuguesas para “c\u00e1llese” y “c\u00e1liz” para cantar sobre la opresi\u00f3n militar bajo la apariencia de relato b\u00edblico.<\/div>\n

Durante esa \u00e9poca su sencillo de protesta (ligeramente disimulada) “A pesar de voc\u00ea” pas\u00f3 desapercibido de alguna manera por los censores militares y se convirti\u00f3 en el himno del movimiento democr\u00e1tico. Despu\u00e9s de vender 100.000 copias, el sencillo fue finalmente censurado y todas las copias fueron retiradas del mercado. A pesar de la censura, canciones como “Samba de Orl\u00fd” (1970), “Constru\u00e7\u00e3o” (1971), “Acorda amor” (1974) y “Vai passar” (1983) hicieron patente la continua oposici\u00f3n de Chico. Tambi\u00e9n es cierto, sin embargo, que sus letras abordan temas de car\u00e1cter m\u00e1s personal, con un aire sutil, y en un contexto musical hondo y refinado.<\/div>\n

Silvio Rodr\u00edguez lo nombra en su canci\u00f3n “Qui\u00e9n Fuera (Coraz\u00f3n)”, tambi\u00e9n Fito P\u00e1ez lo menciona en su canci\u00f3n “Carabelas Nada”. En 1998, la escuela de samba de Mangueira gan\u00f3 el primer lugar del carnaval carioca con un tema de homenaje a Chico Buarque.<\/div>\n

He is known mainly for his songs of refined harmony, partly indebted to Ant\u00f4nio Carlos Jobim, and for his lyrics, which range from intimate themes to issues such as the cultural, economic and social situation in Brazil.<\/div>\n

Throughout his life he has alternated his musical career with that of a novelist and playwright. His last three novels, Budapeste (2005), Leite spilled (2009) and The German Brother (2016), have been highly acclaimed and deserving of the important Jabuti Prize. He was born into an intellectual and privileged family. His father, Sergio Buarque de Hollanda, was a well-known historian and sociologist. Buarque was a studious boy with an early interest in music and writing. From early on he was impressed by music, especially bossa nova and especially the work of Jo\u00e3o Gilberto.<\/div>\n

Buarque’s public debut as a musician and composer occurred in 1964 and he soon made a reputation for himself through his participation in music festivals and television shows. His first album, Chico Buarque, showcased the work to come, with catchy sambas, characterized by creative puns and an undertone of tragic nostalgia.<\/div>\n

After the 1964 Brazilian Coup, Chico began writing about the situation and avoided censorship by using cryptic analogies and puns. His increasing political activity and his collaboration with filmmakers, playwrights and musicians in works protesting against the military dictatorship of Brazil earned him his arrest in 1968 and moved him into exile to Italy in 1969. Chico Buarque returned to Brazil in 1970, where he used his fame and skill to write songs as a protest against the dictatorship. An example of this was the song “C\u00e1lice” (1973), which was composed by him in conjunction with Gilberto Gil, since he plays with the Portuguese words for “shut up” and “chalice” to sing about military oppression under the guise of biblical account.<\/div>\n

During this time, his protest single (slightly disguised) “In spite of voc\u00ea” went unnoticed somehow by the military censors and became the anthem of the democratic movement. After selling 100,000 copies, the single was eventually censored and all copies were withdrawn from the market. Despite the censorship, songs like “Samba de Orl\u00fd” (1970), “Constru\u00e7\u00e3o” (1971), “Acorda amor” (1974) and “Vai passar” (1983) made Chico’s continued opposition clear. It is also true, however, that his lyrics address issues of a more personal nature, with a subtle air, and in a deep and refined musical context.<\/div>\n

Silvio Rodr\u00edguez names it in his song “Who Outside (Heart)”, Fito P\u00e1ez also mentions it in his song “Carabelas Nada”. In 1998, the Mangueira samba school won first place at the Carioca carnival with a tribute to Chico Buarque.<\/div>\n
